This will tell our age, but who cares.   Age is a 'mind' set and my mind is young.

When I was growing up, I remember every afternoon after school, we would run to the TV and watch American Bandstand.  It was a show with Dick Clark as the host.  The show consisted of teenagers dancing to the songs in the top 40 lineup.  I remember seeing the "twist" and "jitter bug" dances to a variety of music which I guess would have been soft rock and soul music.

American Bandstand was on TV from 1952 to 1987.  It began in Philadelphia, PA, then was moved to Los Angeles in 1964.

I never did learn to dances during the time but loved to watch these real life teenagers.  Many of them became recording artists themselves.

It didn't take much to keep us entertained, back in the old days.

Anyone else remember American Bandstand???

Kay I do, so I guess I'm telling my age as well. I used to love to watch it. I have always like to dance. I would turn up the TV and dance the night away!

That was where we learned the coolest dance moves.  Not an opportunity we'd get in our little farming community.

I LOVED American Bandstand!  That is where I saw, and "fell in love with" (as much as a young girl can) with Tony DiFranco of the DiFranco Family.  It must have been 1970-something.  Of course, seeing Donny Osmond on there was a treat too.  I have fond memories of American Bandstand.  Thanks for bringing them back!  Now I'm going to have to search on YouTube to refresh my memory a bit more.

I think that's where I fisrt saw Chubby Checker doing the "Twist". Did that open the gates or what.

Think of all the talent we got to see on that show. Thanks to Dick Clark!!!

I was only 8 but I remember it .... and yes, I even remember Barry Manilow's "Bandstand" song (my mom had the album). I miss the way TV was quite frankly! I loved Andy Griffith, Gilligans Island, McCales Navy and my favorites - Mash, Laverne & Shirley and of course Happy Days. I always said I was born in the WRONG Era! My grandma giggled at the Gong Show  and Johnny Carson and even I got a kick out of the Newlywed Game :).

Anyway ... it's always great thinking back!

PS. I was talking to a friend of mine about some old 8 tracks we used to share (The Carpenters, The Bee Gee's, Andy Gibb & Abba etc...) and my 8 year old said, "What the heck is an 8 Track" lol. He gets the same confused look when I refer to my old 45 collection (which was misplaced long ago). Too Funny. What really got him is when I told him that we didn't have Satellite Cable (or cable at all for that matter) as kids :), he's like "What the heck did you do when you were a kid" and I responded with, "We played Hide 'n Seek, War, Played in the Creek, Played at the Park, and Rode Bikes - we lived outside!" Kids these days ... it's no wonder there are such serious obesity issues - they need to shut off the electronics and go outside!

I remember it!  I remember it well enough to know how very, very odd it was that Dick Clark looked exactly the same for so long.  (What planet IS he from, Men In Black?)  Of course, I was watching it in the 50's.  That REALLY dates me!

Judy D, Yes I remember doing the same thing.  I could dance like crazy in the living room alone but not on the dance floor in public. I was very bashful then.

Karen W, Yeah I lived where I was born, College Station, TX, and at that time it was only a farming and ranching community even though Texas A&M was there.  I was a small place then.

Jeannie, Great time for all of us.  When you find the links, you can write a blog about it.

Don G, Yep that's where we first saw Chubby Checkers and the twist.  As I was writing the blog, I was actually humming that song.  I can still twist.  IF I'd twist about two hours a day, I might look better....ha.

Jennifer, You're right.  Kids now days just sit in front of a computer or TV and don't play 'hide and seek' and all those outdoor sports we enjoyed.  We stay outside almost all day and played.  Children were allowed to be children then.  Now they have to act grown up in first grade, it seems.  Growing up too fast.

Tricia, I was watching it in the 50s also.  I was the youngest and I remember my sister and uncle not wanting me in the same room they were in while watching American Bandstand.  I would hide behind the couch and peek my head out to watch it.  Times have changed.

Kay-- I remember it in the 1960's--My sister who is 5 years older would have it on... I would never admit

it then but I thought it was pretty cool. As an adult it was fun to watch in the 1980's--thanks--mike

Michael, I was already in real estate in the 80s and don't remember it being on that long but it was.  Guess my kids must have started watching it.  It was always a great show.

Miss Kay--

I was thinking about American Bandstand just the other day.  There are several retrospectives on YouTube you'll surely enjoy.

I too loved AB, but my favorite tv show of the era was the MICKEY MOUSE CLUB,  remember, Annette, Donnie, Chubby (?) the cute little blonde girl with the ponytails? and they had different segments on each day? One day was at the ranch? wow, oldtime memories for sure.  Thanks for the jog down memorylane Kay :)  have a great weekend.

12/09/2007 06:38 AM by Gail Tassey (Keller Williams Realty)

Hi Kay and Gail:  Just from memory... the little girl with the pigtails was Karen, and her little boyfriend on the show was Cubby, not Chubby.  You may have him confused with Chubby Checker... LOL.

Also, the segment at the ranch was named "Spin and Marty."  Spin was the hottie, and Marty was a bit more "studious..." and I think he was rich maybe... had a chauffeur ???  Once again, why I can remember this without googling it, and cannot remember what I had for dinner last night... I have no clue... LOL.

Kay, I remember it so well.  I remember the skirts the girls wore, and the scarves in their pony tails. They also wore cardigan sweaters, sometime backwards.  The guys jeans had those very, very thin belts.  I love to dance (and still do, but just don't have the stamina).

Hi Bill C. Isn't it strange how our minds drift back into time and you were thinking of American Bandstand probably on the day I wrote it down as a future blog.  I keep a list of what I want to blog.

12/09/2007 10:37 AM by Kay Perry (Classic Realty/GMAC)

Karen Anne, I'd say your memory is wonderful.  I can't remember all the words but I remember the tune...... Oh Yes, what did I do this morning?  Can't remember that....ha

12/09/2007 10:38 AM by Kay Perry (Classic Realty/GMAC)

Oh yes Gail....how could I ever forget the Mickey Mouse Club.  That was one of my favorites.  I remember how much fun we had watching it then pretending we were one of them. I was probably only about five or six?  Can't remember, but young.

Kay:  So I have the memory of an elephant, huh ?  Please, dear... I know I could stand to lose a few pounds... well... more like sixty pounds... but an elephant... yikes.  I need to start Jazzersizing.  Mebbe that will do it.  If only I could get down to where it might be said I have the memory of a horse.  LOL.

Take care, Kay.  Have a great Sunday. !

Hi Karen Anne, Well I didn't say you LOOK like an elephant...that's ME....I need to lose more pounds than I will admit.  Okay, so you have a memory of a dog.  Does that sound better? YOU are a character.  I will have to meet you next time I'm in Ft.Worth area.

12/09/2007 01:05 PM by Kay Perry (Classic Realty/GMAC)

Hi Kay:  First I'm an elephant, now I'm a dog.  Now you're getting really personal.  Ummm... I think I'd prefer to be a cat... if I may.  <grin>
