Stewardship: The Way to a PLEASANT Blogging Experience

By
Real Estate Agent with Liberty Homes RS-#62825

Recently,  Bob Stewart - ActiveRain  talked about STEWARDSHIP in a comment thread and he's so right. Following is a partial part of his comment:  "If you have a following on ActiveRain, you need to HOLD YOURSELF TO A HIGHER STANDARD. Having a big following (and there are a ton of you commenting on this that do) means that you take stewardship over the community as a whole. ..........Your actions reflect positively and negatively on ALL OF US."

Edit: Please read through the whole post before commenting...... (this isn't about negativity!)

Many posts have been written regarding something negative they see on this forum and I believe that ActiveRain members (as a group of peers in the Real Estate Industry on this forum) have the ability to utilize their creative talents in writing to create a pleasant atmosphere for new members and give them something to appreciate this forum with....not scare them away!

There are also people who just joined who are new in the industry and even the rest of us older members who have continuously wanted a place to just come and socialize, connect with peers in our industry, read and learn and give back to the community as well.

There is a fine line between being stating an opinion and jokingly (OR NOT) mocking other people in a public forum. I have continuously watched for the past couple of months the rumors that grow from assumptions. It has not been a pleasant experience for MANY of us. I continuously receive emails about the drama and all I keep saying is that we as a whole can recreate this experience in a positive light for the whole community to enjoy.

What part of ANYONE CAN JOIN this forum do some not understand? Go ahead and click on Members Only (like I'm going to do on this one) but realize that it DOES NOT EXEMPT anyone from the public reading it anyway. This forum and blogging experience does not exempt you from following laws and the guidelines of our industry or this forum.

They describe stewardship as:

The actions and decisions of other people represent the primary resource for occupations such as sales, management, or charitable organizations. In this sense, stewardship refers to managing and growing the relationships with these primary resources, people. Thus, encouragement, influenctial leadership, recognizing people, providing services, facilitative leadership, and conveying the impact that the person has made to the organization are elements of relationship stewardship.

We can thank ActiveRain and all they have given us by simply giving back to the community in a respectful manner and respecting others and their right of individuality.  Write your ActiveRain Success Story or about how this community and your peers have positively affected you and your business. How ActiveRain helped you to connect with your peers, how ActiveRain is a place to make a few friends. The POSITIVE stuff.

**Leading by example.  What's your story?**

**Edit:  If you have a story....please write one....we need all the positive stories out there!  Use success, community or whatever....just tag them with ActiveRain Success Story, ActiveRain Community Support etc. Click on the links above to look at the tags and stories.....Thanks!

Kim: Oh, goodness.....I forgot you! Of course, of course!  Thanks Kim...it's a good affirmation that we all can choose what not to read :) It also needs to be out there that the 'crap' affects other people...and how we can give more positive stuff to create a better "world".

Dan: Yeah...I've always said...just because there are a few bad apples....does not mean all of us have to be classified in the bunch....I just wonder......what does the public perceive?  Anyone can join and look at great stuff....and then run across some other not so good stuff.

Some food for thought, as ActiveRain continues to grow.  There's bound to be a learning curve, with so many newer members each day, and those who have been here a few months can help set the tone by being positive, refraining from personal attacks in comments and posts, and demonstrating the best in our profession to each other and consumers.  Thank you for this excellent post, Sally!

Let me add that I delete negative and inappropriate comments with impunity, when they occur on my blog posts.  Fortunately, it doesn't happen often, but I think it is important to maintain the image of our professionalism in this public environment.  Opinions that disagree with mine are welcome, because they add to the dialogue, but I'm not above a little censorship if I think any comment detracts from my profession, ActiveRain, or my blog post.

Margaret: I surely agree Margaret!  It doesn't set a great example when a few refuse to act like humans ....and knowing this is for PEERS to interact. Can you imagine their business practices? YUK.

Margaret :)  I do the same Margaret....there is no need for that and though I welcome opinions too..it is quite obvious when the ones that are just out to "get everyone" appear. Zap .... :)

Sally, I think you set a wonderful example for the rest of us.  You are very gracious in the face of conflict.  I think Bob is right, that those who have a large following on AR bear a greater responsibility to set a tone for the whole community.  I've seen very few negative posts in the year that I've been on AR, so I haven't witnessed the drama and that's fine with me.

Gail: Yup... even though I see them...and sometimes take them a little too much to heart.....I believe I learn something every day from them. Other times it may be too much drama and I have to detach...in either case...this platform isn't here to be abused...at least I don't think it is :)

Sally, By the time I had read all 80+ comments I had to go back and review your blog!!! Doggonit I can't find a single one of you to disagree with! I agree that we all have the responsibility to place our best foot forward. When I originally became a member of AR I was so intimidated! Soooo many blogs to read and as I ran across angry ones I was confused.

I began to think I had come to a place where you were suppose to vent! Argh. I've seen a dramatic change lately though that places us all in a more positive light. I know if I thought blogs were negative then I know the public sees it too! I'm not seeing it much anymore! Or, maybe I just learned where not to go? Anyway there are so many wonderful writers here, such as yourself, that I'm honored to be amongst you all! Happy New Year and let's make it a Great 2008!! Deb

Deb: Yup....we tiptoe around the Rain....and learn and live and learn and ...and... :)  It's all a learning process. I have found that the best way for me to think is to always remember I am a professional and this is a REAL estate networking site. We give info, we mingle with our peers (and the thought is to mingle as if face to face talking with each other) network and also have fun, make a couple of friends.

A very wonderful 2008 to you too Deb!

Sally - MY SENTIMENTS EXACTLY - Images Are Forever and active|rain is the canvas upon which we paint an image of ourselves and our business.

The images You paint should look as good in the mirror of next week next month or even next year as you think they do in your mind today

Bringing one's higher self should be our personal goal for ALL our daily activities. Whether that means being kind to a stranger, giving respect to those different from us, bringing calm to a chaotic situation, or writing a short blog for Active Rain. I know I sleep better when I'm able. Thanks for the reminder Sally.
