Going Green Just Got Greener! Solazyme Makes Green Oil!

Just in time for St. Patricks Day!

As I was working out on my elliptical machine this morning I was watching the Discovery Channel. The Program Game Changers was featuring the company Solazyme that is making diesel oil from algae.

Yup, the green stuff Tom was sitting in one of his last posts! Betcha didn't know you were sitting in a gold mine Tom! Now you know what to do with the Green water!

What Solazyme does; is take algae, add natural sugars from cane, grass, garden waste etc and ferment it. (just like beer) Algae has a
garden natural tendency to protect itself from the elements of sun and wind by producing oil.

This oil, Solazyme has found, can be used to make diesel fuel, olive type oil, and botanicals for skin care! Depending on the type of algae (there are thousands) and depending on the sugar they add, they can design the oil to suit the application.

They have spent years developing this technology and even found the cheapest way to do it is not to use the sun for photosynthesis to grow the algae, but adding sugar for photosynthesis and brewing it in the dark!

On the p
green carrogram Game Changers, they featured a drive test for petroleum based diesel and algae based diesel and the performance was exactly the same!

They showed a new skin care line, Algenist, made with the algae oil and also foods products, Solazyme-Roquette Nutritionals, that had been made (including ice cream) from the edible oil produced. dessert

The oil from algae for foods has less calories than other food oils! MMmmm! Send in the cookies!

Oooo! In addition to my interest in getting off of petroleum-based products, I am really interested in that skincare line. Thanks for tip - I'm off to Discovery Channel's website to find out more!

Matt, I hope so too! Our economy in Alberta is much like Texas' rich in natural (although some non renewable) resources. Having said that I still think we need to get as much technology into things like this bio-fuel.

Sharon, I would buy a diesel when they get this going public, if they had a sporty version! :D

Jo, I guess they talked about this all through their college days and past. Then they tried it using sunlight, but it was exorbitantly expensive to make, so they found another way! I love innovation!

Jeff, I'm not sure what the gel point is. I was working out, but I wanted to share this! Maybe it tells on one of the websites I've linked to! Here's to you finding a Benz! :D

Eileen, I was also taken by the hydrogen fueled cars! I saw a program on those a few years ago. I would buy one of those in a heart beat! Apparently the science is working on making the H fuel more stable so they can dispense fuel at a 'gas' station just like regular atations!

Mary, I guess skin care has been using algae based products for a while, but I would also like to know more!

Sal Gal, I can't just go through the motions, it's too boring! Got to keep my mind occupied too! I'm so pumped about this company, I told Dave I want to buy stock!

That's neat if they can make Diesel fuel then they could make heating fuel also.

Peg~I'm all for having oil with fewer calories, but if it's going to make my cookies green, I think I'll go the regular.

Have an awesome day!

Very interesting Peg.  Is this a cost effective way of making diesel fuel yet?   I am going to have to look for this on the Discovery Channel.

Michael, the cooking oil product was actually a buttery yellow, so the cookies looked normal, but a bit more golden.

Jim, if you click on the link it has the episode name and the other link is to Solzyme.

Joan, I agree!

Tibor, you sound just like my husband! Hopefully if enough people get behind this technology, big oil won't be able to sabotage it like the electric car was.

Hi Peg--this is great news.  I would love to see us end our dependency on foreign oil and I am always enamored of anything that is organic in nature.

I think there are a lot of great ideas out there that can do wonders for our dependence on foreign oil.  Hopefully we'll hear more of this before it's too late for the economy to recover.

Janet, Me too! You have such a great program in Hawaii with the solar water heating! I wish our gov't would give us grants/rebates like yours does to install solar power to heat at least the water! We are the sunniest province in Canada!

Doug, if we all get on the band wagon, then perhaps the gov't will listen...
