I'm sitting at a chain oil change location, sipping on a hot cup of burnt folgers and reading active rain.  I over hear a couple loudly discussing and article they read-  "Did you know only 20% of Americans read newspapers, while close to 100% of Europeans read newspapers? That's Horrible!"   This news in itself, is not a reliable source, but is interesting - why do Europeans prefer the paper?

But I didn't have time to think about this, as they continued... the older couple went on "You just cant get the whole story on the internet" he says, "and its too time consuming" she says "The internet only gives you what they want you to see, its really sad people here don't care enough to read or stay informed".

While I don't like being here, waiting to be asked if I would like a new $30 air filter (sells at the chain store for $5.99) the Melting Pot that is the Fast Lube is great entertainment!

But should we worry?  Will enough people get it?  Is my Job at stake? Its mind numbing, and I bite my toung when I hear people talking this way.  But I know I should just laugh, and drink my bad free coffee.

Chris,

Great reporting on a moment in life that I am sure is taking place all too frequently.  You raise several issues and the one that strikes me as the most interesting is the comment about the Europeans.  Sou see I lived there (all right was stationed there0 for 6 years bak in the 70's, at a time when thier baby-boomer genearation was just coming of age, and getting into an awful lot of trouble

Now, I don't want to open up a whold can of political worms here, I know as a country we are divided on many issues and this is not the appropriate place to get too deep into.  However, experiencing first hand the coming of age of a european generation I can tell you those guys are wierd.

Anyway, I better get off my soap box before I really get myself in trouble.

Have a Blessed Day,

Older couple? Yes now I see where you say they are "older."

I think your job is safe.  I don't think we are going back to the days of newsprint on our fingers.

I wonder why they (Europeans not older people)  like papers.....

Well, I can't really say why a whole continent of people might like the newspaper better than Americans but I can say why I did when I spent a year in England a couple of years ago. In a word, their papers are much more intellectually oriented and are written at a higher level of comprehension. In the US, newspaper articles are written so that any 5th grader can understand them. My experience in England, Ireland, and Scotland was that the paper was simply more interesting to read.

I get the news on TV; I listen to it on the radio while out driving from appointment to appointment.  I get the headlines from local TV and newspapers in my e-mail.  And the biggest reason from not reading the paper each day, is our local papers are filled with ads and opinons, not much news.  The little news they have I already got while brushing my teeth.

Aloha to all and have a Hauoli Makahiki Hou  (Happy New Year in Hawaiian)
