22 Comments on Why Can't I Just Be Me And You Be You When We Blog??
Victor- Exactly. I have been here for quite awhile now and have learned so much. But when it comes to my voice I truly want it to be me and not the way someone else feels is the correct way.
kathy- Getting the words out can sometimes be hard for all of us but even harder when someone says your way is so not correct. Ugh
Right! I say, "you be you". We are all different and our own voice is how we get to know each others personality. It would be very disappointing and boring if every post we read was the same. The individual writting style and voice makes blogging what it is otherwise I would just read text books.
Lisa- Exactly. there are many very helpful and informative blogs in the rain and I, for one, have learned a lot from them but when someone says your way is wrong or stinks or is incorrect then I find those not to be helpful. just saying.
Martha, Don't hold back. Just be you and forget the others. As you can see, I am not good at all at following rules. If they don't like it - lump it. You do a great job. Thank you for sharing your voice in the Rain!
Hi Martha, I agree with you. I do not know what others think, but to each person has a difference opinion. You do a great job.
It took me a long while to "Just do it" and not worry about what everyone else was saying. As a "Martha" fan I can tell you that you do it right.
Belinda- Thanks I am. I just worry that others that are not so comfortable may find thhat kind of helpfulness intimidating.
Will- Thank you. Now if I can get away from Words with Friends I will be here more often. LOL
Ellie- Ellie I am your fan as well. And I am just doing it for sure. I must say I do stop and think sometimes but that time is getting less an less.
Martha, I love your "voice" and what you have to say! Will always read every word you write. You are so willing to share your wealth of knowledge with us.
Is time for another get together.
Margaret
Hi Martha, this should be a featured post and I just hit the suggest. The kind of posts you are referring to are pretty much exactly the reason why it took me so long to get going. It was intimidating ... blogging is so personal and subjective, that is the beauty of it. I stopped worrying about whether or not the "in-crowd" would like my blogs or not.. as long as I feel good about it, that's all that is important. Now, if only my blog-stalker would stop stalking and creeping me out.. it could be all fun in the rain.
Like my cousin always says "you do you and let me do me." I had and commented on a similar post last week where it carried the tone of I know how to blog better than you. I will admit it did annoy me a bit and it may have shown in my comment. If I offended anyone I'm sorry. But the writer clear felt that her way was the best way and only way and it appeared that she was snubbing everyone else. I agree with you and my cousin: you do you and let me do me.
Oh BTW, I'm giving you the "Tude award.
Featured in the group Bananatude.
Martha, I'm with you. Some days are better than others for blogging. We each have to do what works for us. BTW, I love the new logo.
Martha
Is there REALLY a "correct" way? I don't think so. There are certainly things we can do that will improve our blogging, and certainly a whole of stuff that is probably not such a good idea.
It's pretty easy to get frustrated by people sharing their thoughts on do's and don'ts, although I think that is typically well intentioned. Given the way AR is it encourages pelple to share their thoughts, and they do.
Ultimately I think you have to do what feels right for you - your temperament, your mood, your personality, and NOT be someone on-line that is not you.

Martha- you make a very good point. One of the suggestions that seasoned bloggers make here is to write in your own voice. And I do believe that. It's a heck of a lot easier to be YOU than to try to be what you think others think you should be. Usually if I email a "newbie" about their blog it's to remind them that they can post to up to 5 groups so that their blog gets more exposure if they want. Outside of that, I wouldn't want to step on anyone's toes about what their voice is.
You did a great job here and if this is your voice... I say keep it up!
I guess we all just need to take the advice with a grain of salt. Clearly our profession is filled with folks that just KNOW their way is the right way...blogging is no different.
As for your voice, don't ever change. I like you just the way you are.
Martha I like you as you and me as me. I always blog the way I want to, I suppose that is my uniqueness :)
One of the things I love about Activerain is the many different personalities, experiences, and talents of participants. It wouldn't be nearly as interesting if every blog and blogger was the same.
So suggested, Martha! There is a vast difference between suggested tips and harsh and un-asked for critiquing. Personally, I like the posts that offer real glimpses into the person writing them ... as you say, warts and all. Gives me a much better perspective of who I am reading, possibly learning from, and possibly referring down the road too. JMO ...

Martha - You are so right! Everyone has a different voice and a different way of expressing themselves. Some are really good with humor, while some you just hope don't try to be funny very often, because it doesn't work for them. :-D Still others are great at making data analysis interesting, while others lose you after the first sentence. It's all a matter of being YOU - and even then, sometimes it takes a while to find a style you're comfortable with and that reflects who you are!
On a side note - as a marketing junkie, I LOVE your logo. LOVE it. It captures the essence of living on Chespeake Bay in an elegant and inviting manner. Gorgeous!
Being you is actually what you do best and when it ain't broke don't fix it. You have a wonderful clear and truthful voice. Keep it up. By the way. I love your real estate sign.
