This past Friday, December 7th, I was fortunate to facilitate the Los Angeles Area Home Stagers SIF Roundtable. Generously hosted by the Brook Furniture Rental Showroom in Sherman Oaks, they provided us with a delicious lunch catered by The Corner Bakery (if you haven't tried their cream cheese brownies, run, don't walk, to your nearest Corner Bakery to try them!) .

The Brook employees were happy to address our concerns about the perception they are offering staging services and in competition with us Professional Home Stagers. In a nutshell, they said that they offer furniture for staging, and not staging services. They were aghast when I told them what happened to Karen Dembsky as related in her blog. They assured me that they would take up the matter with the head honchos at Brook Corportate

There were about 25 of us in attendance. I was afraid that the weather (we are not used to rain here in normally sunny southern CA) was going to limit the number of attendees, but I was pleasantly surprised when almost everyone who had RSVP'd showed up. Some of our attendees drove down from Santa Maria which is about a 2 hour drive in each direction!

Brook also gave us each a gift of a very nice candle, brochures and a CD of their catalog.

We pushed all the furniture into a large circle and everyone chowed down during the meeting.

We covered a lot of ground, using the template of questions that Craig Schiller had provided for us. Everyone was very generous sharing information about how they run their business and handle certain situations. The discussions were lively and interesting, and I know I walked away from that meeting feeling like we had all participated in something big that will make us, as individual stagers and business owners, and the staging industry as a whole, better & stronger. Just as an example Annie Pinsker-Brown announced that she would be willing to help out some of the less experience people attending by allowing them to "job shadow" her.

I am very happy to have met all the wonderful people who attended our Roundtable. I think some will turn into friends, not just business associates. I met a number of people I would feel comfortable referring out jobs to. It was a good mix of "veteran" and "newbies", "naked" and "designated". I look forward to the next Los Angeles Area SIF Roundtable, hopefully in February 2008

Michelle Minch! You have eased my mind. I too wondered about your attendance because of the weather. How wonderful that you had such a wonderful turnout! Even better that you had such a great mix of talents, skills and knowledge! Roll on!!!

Michelle, it's so great to hear the meeting went so well. Annie's offer to allow shadowing is amazingly generous!

I noticed everyone had name tags. I'm wondering what else I should arrange for the Ontario RT. Extra pens and paper? Water?

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

P.S. Thanks for the addition of the photos in your last staging post. What an incredible house! I am so in love with those brown couches, btw, they are so versatile!

Dane: The name tags really helped. I know they are goofy, but it is nice to address someone by their name, especially during the questions and answers. I had never met anyone there before, except Maureen McManus and my two assistants, so it helped to put faces to names.

I emailed everyone before and told them to bring a pad and pen for taking notes, or doodling if they were bored.

Having some snacks and drinks is very nice and everyone always appreciates it. You will get them to stay longer, too;-)

I made copies of Craig's questions and gave everyone a copy so they could be more invested in the process. Quite a few made their notes on those pages.

If you are feeling overwhelmed, ask someone on your RSVP list to help you.

I think the most helpful thing I did, in terms of organizing the meeting was to use Evites. It is so easy to keep track of the RSVPs and to send out more information. I highly recommend it.

I think one of the best ways we can improve this industry is to mentor. I am glad Annie made her offer to the group.

Good luck Dane. Contact me if you have anymore questions.

Awesome, Michelle, and actually Kathy and I will benefit from the advice you've given to Dane.  I sent you an e-mail to discuss brook -- Kathy and I are also trying to address the issue with the Atlanta location as to what happened.  We have made some head way.  Still have a ways to go.  Thx for your help on the issue.

Thank you for sharing your Roundtable here Michelle, it looks like it was a great success.

I'm looking forward to hosting ours here in North Texas in January and like you said, this is something that is bigger than any one of us and will help all of us grow our businesses as well as move staging as an industry forward and make it better for all. Eventually I would love to see a national SIF RT at some point. Wouldn't that be great?!

Karen D: Glad to hear you are making headway. I think a s#$%& storm is going to rain down on the Atlanta showroom if they don't clean up their act.

Karen O: I wish you great good luck with your RT. It was an amazing experience, if for nothing more than to find out we are all in this together. We are not working alone. I can't even imagine what a national forum would be like.

Thank you so much for facilitating the LA SIF RT.  I had a great time and met so many wonderful talented stagers.  Brooks really did a great job welcoming us all and the lunch was top notch!

I just sent out my "evite's" for the Orange County SIF RT held at the Brook Showroom in Newport Beach and I only hope it turns out as well as yours did!  :)

Thank you again for all your hard work.  It was a pleasure meeting you.

Kathy: I so wish I could be there. Besides being a world class stager, Karen Otto is a very funny person. I'm one of her biggest fans. I'm sure she will make a fabulous facilitator. There is so much we can learn from each other.

Michelle,

thanks so much for your hard work. It was a great session and I hope we can keep up the idea of all of us coming together as a united industry. My hope is someday, stagers will be part of the transaction just as agents, inspectors and title companies are.

Thanks again everyone,

Is there a master list someone that lets us know about all round tables throughout the United States? A primary list? Kym

Kym, are you aware of the roundtable on Jan. 10 in Lathrop...yes CA.  Hosted by Shell Brodnax.  Here is the link to her blog about it.  I know that she has a deadline of Jan. 3rd for RSVP's but if you contact her personally she'll let you know if there's still room.

Hope to meet you there.

Also if you search "roundtables" here in AR I think there is also a master list, but I'm not sure how recently it was updated?

Please put me on that list.  I'm in the South Bay.

Fashion Furniture had an event in Orange County last April, but I got a big staging job that week and couldn't make it.  Do anyone here attend?

Thanks!
