Why is the government planning on bailing out the banking industry? What does this mean to the in terms of becoming a  nanny state? This is the beginning of the banks being taken over by the government. Why should the government be expected to pick up the pieces of a fractured mortgage industry.  Why is it that there is the lament about the lack of affordable housing yet when there is a downturn in the market which brings down home prices we say that the sky is falling?  Don't we want homes to be more affordable? This shakeout was inevitable, the market has spoken. Trying to manipulate it will make things worse all around.

This is a rant, I am really concerned about the government taking too active a role  in picking up the pieces for big business.

Anyone with ANY common sense saw the writing on the wall a couple of years ago...but rode the wave until it petered out. Politics requires that the government do something to "cushion" the fall. Let's just hop they don't make things much worse.

Bailouts just encourage more bailouts.  When will we ever learn?

Tara - we don't know what to think about all of this conundrum. We read the pros and cons, think we understand it, and still walk away muttering. What's of the most concern to us is over our current. Without getting political, we don't see much of anything that's being done well these days.

With all due respect. I understand that families will be hurt by the changing market. We were not children signing these contracts that are now adjusting. Everyone has a choice, sometimes we make the wrong choice and have to learn by our mistakes. Having the government step in to help only the unfortunates only perpetuates a problem. The people who make the right choices end up paying.

Someone, anyone show me an instance where government intervention was helpful. It perpetuates the problem.

James and Tara:

Excellent points.  Politics sure are ironic.  When things don't make sense, follow the money and follow the vote mongers.  In politics, things aren't as they appear.  There is always a hidden agenda.

Tara-My concern is like yours, but let me add another question...Do we really want the government poking their head into these businesses? That to me is opening the door of them wanting to control. It makes me feel a little uneasy.
