How Soon Can I Expect A Referral From Activerain After I Become A Member?

By
Real Estate Agent with RE/MAX Compass 0524642

A few days ago a local professional I met inquired about Activerain. He wanted to know how long after becoming a member could he expect a referral.

I guess that's a fair question. The answer is pretty simple. You never know. It could take five minutes or five months. It all depends how "active" you are and how you market yourself. Maybe you're in a small market like Montgomery, Texas or say.. Moscow Texas. If you rank high as a member then you can expect that you'll have a higher likelihood of increased traffic from fellow AR members. It's like taking a listing. You never know when or how fast you're going to get the first offer.

I almost always search for a fellow AR agent versus the web.

It's critical you setup a profile picture. You need to update your profile fully. Commit to a few blog posts a week if at all possible. Blog about anything, but blog.

The key is to get and stay Active. Don't worry about the referrals, that'll take care of itself.

Like anything worthwhile doing, it takes time and commitment. Blogging may not be for everyone. Good advice about setting up the ActiveRain profile completely. Doesn't look professional when a member's profile says "write something about yourself here."

I agree with many of the comments, it as been my experience that when you least expect it, a referral comes a calling.

I was here a pretty short time before I got the first call. As you said, you really need to be active to make referrals work. Hence, the title "active" rain.

Referrals are a possibility, but probably not the only reason one should sign up here.  I personally haven't gotten an actual referral from here, not worried about that though.  The learning and the friendships I have made here are priceless :).

Greg:  Sounds as though this person thought Active Rain was a "leads" program instead of what it really is:  A wonderful world of highly educated professional Realtors and others in our industry who will keep you informed, take you to task when necessary or even send a referral.

Referrals are always the big question, right?  That is really a tough one, who the heck knows.  I can't even remember how long it took before I got one but I am keeping track now!

I want to SELL your home, not LIST it!

I don't referrals should be the main or only reason for joining ActiveRain.  There are so many other benefits to be gained that referrals are just the icing on the cake.

By definition a RainMaker is a person that can make things happen. Nothing can happen unless there is activity that gets the name out there and the quality of the blogs that demonstrate knowledge and consistency

Greg - We too come here first when it comes to doing referrals. I know that I will find the best agents here and be able to contact them in a timely manner as well.

I know this post is regarding referrals but I would like to add something I found interesting. You never know where your post will appear. I was doing an online class for CE hours and in the course ActiveRain bloggers were referenced. Cook, Ken. (September 11, 2007). Active Rain. In Novation Mortgage. Retrieved April 21, 2009, from http://activerain.com/blogsview/201194/What-Is-A-Straw-Buyer and According to Ed Rybczynski who writes for www.activerain.com http://activerain.com/blogsview/29083/The-Silent-Second-Revisited. I think that alone says a lot about this site. Besides getting referrals you are also recognized as knowledgeable professionals. Sorry for getting off topic but I thought it was worth mentioning. Kind of made me proud to be a part of ActiveRain.

I'm just not sure about the part where you say "blog about anything, just blog." I guess that would be content for another post. Is that all there is to it? It doesn't have to be particularly good, just frequent? That's probably what I'm doing wrong.

That's a reasonable question, I suppose, and a great answer. But if that is the reason for being here that person may get frustrated pretty quickly. I know people who have never gotten a referral but do well with business ferom their AR blogging. No tellin'.

I am not sure there is a clear cut answer. . . I know I have given several and just recently received the first one that was truly in my area.

Greg-  I can tell when I am not active on AR that the referrals stop.  Getting more involved into anything will always produce more and the outcome is greater!

Greg, agree with Jeff. Blogging is a long term investment and referrals and business may or may not happen overnight or over months. But it will happen. Consistency and effort are the key, especially including the profile.

Greg:

It does take time for people to feel comfortable with you and for them to trust their client to you.  I have been blogging for a year and got one referral which didn't pan out.  However, I haven't sent a referral yet.  I keep trying but my client find their own Realtor before checking out my referral.
