Dinner TableThis week (starting this past Saturday) is Edible Austin Eat Local Week.  This is a winter fundraiser for a program, Urban Roots, that feeds the minds and bodies of young people in Austin while helping them feed themselves through the practice of growing some of their own food.  Urban Roots is part of YouthLaunch, which is aimed at empowering youth through service.

Eating locally, or as close to locally as possible, is healthy for you and healthy for the environment.  Fresher food, which has to be hauled shorter distances, resulting in less pollution of your body or your environment.  You help the smaller local farmers survive.  Plus, fresher food usually tastes better, too!  There are several groups, local and national, that can help you get into the swing of eating more locally; Edible Austin is just one of them.

It is, isn't it, Deb?  And it's also got us planning expansion of our vegetable garden for next year, too!

Chris, Dale, this isn't my program, though I am working my way towards eating locally as much as possible.  Just one that I ran across in the quest for more information on doing so.  I will be supporting it, though, now that I've found it!
