The Unstoppable Power of Media & You

By
Real Estate Technology with Rentec Direct

Lately, I've been coming across a common theme when reading and it has to do with the collective mind, the power of the media and the concept of the humanization of technology. From social to political to environmental, our perspectives are no longer controlled entirely by those that hold the purse-strings. Our world is moving towards a true global community whether or not we like the pieces that make up the whole platform.

In my daily life working with web-based property management software, I am surprised how many times I will get the same question, in one day, over and over, from different customers in all parts of the country. It's as if the whole property management community got together and came up with a list of what is suppose to be relevant for the day! In one of the videos below it is stated that there are more people on Facebook today than were alive 200 years ago. Think for a moment about how quickly a topic can go viral on Facebook and you can see where I'm headed.

I'm reading a book by Bryan Welch called "Beautiful and Abundant" and in it he speaks of a paradigm shift for effecting change in our individual lives and the world at large. He offers up an example of the fashion industry and of how, almost instantly, a new trend can reach every corner of the globe and become part of our culture. We all grasp that an idea can spread almost instantly via the internet, however we are beginning to grasp that this idea can lead to an immediate action. Action is power. Overnight, the world can change. Overnight, the world can put into action something it finds valuable.

In the videos below, you will feel the power of media. You will be moved by their message. While the causes below are enormous in scope, the message is this: Your actions matter & you are powerful. While we are not saving lives, electing powerful leaders nor shifting environmental policy in our daily lives in property management, we are touching people. We are influencing people in how & where they live, how to spend their money and in turn we are influencing the world with how we spend money made off of these people. Take a moment to think about your place in this web. How are you connecting? What tools are you using to connect? What tools are you using to profit? Do you inspire? Do you motivate? How effective are you?

Thanks Janell for sharing that video about Kony... yet, what seemed to be a good intent to start with has been receiving criticisms lately.  Just read an article about that video getting negative attention when shown to people in Uganda.  Sometimes, you can't help but wonder if the video truly represented the voice of the people who suffered such atrocities.. and yet, on the awareness level, I'd say this campaign has successfully caught the world's attention and this is why we should never underestimate the powers of media these days.  Cheers!

Yes, Aaron, intersting backlash surrounding the video's explosion, and thanks for the feedback.   It's amazing to me the sheer speed at which this particular video went viral and what compelled so many folks from different backgrounds to take the time to watch and respond.  Very effective creation.  Purely from a marketing standpoint, I tried to pay attention to the delivery and content and grasp why and how it was so effective. Brilliant really.  We can all learn from these sucesses.

As a side note, having dabbled in fundraising for various worthy causes in my personal time, I find the transparancy of the non-profit to have reasonable disclosure and alignment with my philathropic goals.  There are lots of great watchdog agencies out there that assist in sifting through varies chartitys' organization.

@Janell:  I'm quite new here so I'm replying to you like I used to do on Twitter ( laughs ).  Yes, who would have thought it would reach millions of views.  Simply genius.  Wow, it's awesome you're doing philanthropic work as that's one of my future goals.. Cheers!

Welcome, Aaron!  You'll laugh about this... I've never used twitter.  (Sometimes I find I skip over whole trends... remember when a CD player with 500 CD storage came out??!? I waited long enough and technology just passed me by...)  And, by all means, I'm NOT a marketing or charity guru ... just a simpleton with observations.  That's the joy of this place - so many levels of related industry folks coming together to share their ideas/questions/experiences.  :)

@Janell on #5:  Wow, seriously?  I'm quite a twitter-holic as engaging with tweeple (people) there happens in a click.  They even have those one-hour real time twitter chats where you get to share thoughts or debate with like-minds and connect with your target market.  If there's one thing I want this place to have is a reply button like what you see in blogs so it's easier to reply back.

Hey, that's really a curious thing that you're not on Twitter when lots of folks are.  If you're available, I would love to interview you about this experience as my partner and I are writing a book.  Anyway, have a happy Easter in advance!

I would love to be your guinea pig, Aaron.  ;)   I'm positive twitter is a fabulous way to stay connected and, like many things, prioritizing how much time I stay connected is the real issue.  I love finding smarter ways to accomplish my goals, and enjoy another's perspective.

Happy Easter to you, too.  Tweet-tweet!

Coming accross your blog post from over a year ago and commentary are very timely! I'm sitting down today exploring, and setting up some social media accounts for Rentec.  I'm working on Facebook and google+ but maybe twitter and LinkedIn should also be on my que.... Wish me luck!
