Autism Speaks Walk - Meet Mason Martinez
Mason is a child with autism. His brother plays on our Wellington Colts Travel Baseball team with our son. I have gotten to know Mason over the last year or so because our son and Mason's brother are on a lot of baseball teams together. They were both in All Stars, both play Rec Little League and both are on the travel team.
Mason is a special kid. He likes to put in his earplugs and watch movies on his ipad while the rest of us are cheering for our sons in the bleachers. He is very skilled in tuning us all out. He gets impatient once in a while especially when there is a double header game and when it gets really hot outside. So Sandy often takes him home before the games are over.
Sandy is an awesome mother who puts her sons first. Their well-being is most important to her. Her husband is one of the travel coaches. Martinez family share Cuban heritage with the Gasset family:) and baseball:).
We also have another connection: real estate. We were the listing agents on a Wellington short sale in Black Diamond a couple of years ago and the Martinez family is the family that purchased the home. And boy was that a story to tell!!! They were so grateful for Nestor helping them on the closing day when ... well.. we will save that story for another day. I want to keep the focus on Mason.
The other day Sandy was called in to the school Mason was attending after kids were mean to him and she had to pull him out of that school. They finally found another private school where Mason hopefully will be safe from abusive taunting and such.
Mason decided he wanted to to the Autism Speaks Walk and he started to raise money for it. At the end of the day, he has raised more than anyone else raised. He raised $ 1,081 for Autism Speaks.
He said that he wanted to do this because he wants to find a way to cure Autism. He said that he not want anyone to feel like him and that Autism is a terrible disorder.
Mason does not play baseball but he does study Tae Kwon Do. He is now a green belt. Tae Kwon Do is an excellent sport for kids with Autism.
We salute and congratulate Mason for his journey through living with Autism and his desire to help others. We commend him for gathering up the strength to do this walk.
