A SE Grand Rapids standard has opened a location on the NE Side (Northland Drive between E. Beltline and Cannonsburg Road. THE REAL FOOD CAFE- lives up to the name.
We tend to go for late breakfast/early lunch so we've not encountered much of a wait, but the word is spreading (and I'm someone conflicted about spreading it more, as it could contribute to bigger crowds yet). But it's so refreshing to find a LOCALLY OWNED RESTAURANT where the owner is on the floor greeting guests, busing tables, whatever is necessary to assure that things are running smoothly.
The breakfasts are wonderful. Fried potatoes (that back in my restaurant days were called American fries) with onion cooked in. YUMMMMMM. High quality bacon, ham (I assume sausage too, but I'm not much of a sausage guy). Pancakes that are as big as your head and lighter than air.
The servers are very busy, but never to busy to smile, take good care of you, welcome you warmly and maybe most importantly, serving your food while it's still piping hot.
Portions are ample, the menu is varied. If you cannot find something that sounds great, you're not trying. I've been greatly tempted by the desserts, but other than a gigantic cherry oatmeal cookie, I've fought the urge. I understand Mrs. Owner is a pastry chef by training, and it looks like it.
We sent a dozen of the aforementioned cherry oatmeal cookies to our daughter in Romania. She asked us to never do it again. She didn't say so, but I suspect they had a very short life expectancy.
Daily specials, homemade soups, amazing omelets, wonderful service in a no pretense, very attractive environment.
They don't take plastic, but there's an ATM in the entry, and cash or local check will work.
Two locations: On on Eastern Ave in Alger Heights the other on Northland Drive, South of the River in Plainfield Township.
Enjoy!
