I Wonder What They Were Thinking?

I was at a property that an addition was part of the rehab project. I could not help but notice the outlet placed on the outside of the guardrail next to the balcony. One would think that common sense would dictate that you would place the outlet on the inside of the guard rail. Oh well; so much for common sense.  What is even scarier is that this was passed by the codes department. Hmmmmmmmmmm.misplaced outlet 1misplaced outlet 2

Remarkable.  You must be able to write a book with rediculous things like this that have made past code enforcement.

In our area code calls for outside outlets but the placement is not mandated. Common sense normally helps with the possition but it looks like it didn't in this case.

I would have wanted it to be on the inside of the railing - but I can see why they didn't - As you can see by your pictures if they had moved the deck over a few feet it would have started to cover the window, which would have blocked some of the light.  Not sure of course but that would be my guess.

The railing post looks a little more scary to me. It only appears to be nailed in place on the joist. My question is; what came first the outlet or the deck?

The original owner probably did something to make the home builder mad!
