Last summer I wrote about Florida's Other Snow-Bird~The Northern Atlantic Right Whales...

I told you about how they come visit us for 2 to 3 months in the winter season, have their babies then head back to Nova Scotia.

I gave you backgroud information on why they are so endangered and what is being done to try to bring their numbers back.

I also told you about the volunteers here in Flagler and Volusia Counties that do nothing but watch for these wonderous creatures 7 days a week.

Yesterday I got my first Northeren Atlantic Right Whale Sighting email of the season, I was so excited!

We had a mother and calf between St. Augustine and the Matanzas Inlet.

This morning I got an update and the pair are now the Flagler County area! Yesterday they were last spotted headed "out to sea" just north of the Flagler By The Sea Campground.

The ariel team has photographed the two and they believe they have identified the mother to be Northeren Right Whale #2753.

During the day they are staying about 200 yds offshore, and believe me, they are not hard to spot, unless the seas are grey and it's cloudy which is not the weather we are having right now.

Here is a photo I took a couple years back of a mother and calf that surfaced near our Century 21 Sundance Beachside office so you know what to look for.

If you do happen to see any of these amazing creatures and don't see the Marineland team please call them to let the team to let them know about the whales at 888-979-4253

Lysa, I'm stuck up here in northwestern Ill., and I think it would be amasing to see something like that. The people that devote their time, and effort, must be very proud of the their work.

I too love to keep up to date on our endangered species here. Beautiful creatures and we surely want to protect these species!  Love the pic :)

Lysa- Do you live on the ocean? How are you spotting these? I mean, aside from your previous sightings.

Larry, to see just one of these animals is amazing in itself as there are about 400 of them alive. Considering the odds, and the fact that I've seen about 18 in the 5 yrs I've been here I am lucky! Most of the volunteers are snow birds themselves and yes they are very proud!

Sally, I've decided to keep everyone here at AR up to date on our oceanic snow birds this year. With any luck I'll get fresh photos too! These are unbelievable creatures and we need to keep them safe!

Carole, if you follow the link, there are better photos there. They are protected but are still very much in danger. They move very slow and often get hit by ships or stuck in fishing nets :(

Bill and Barbara Jo, Thank you :)

Lisa, LOL No, I don't live on the ocean, my whale friends keep me up to date on sightings and I keep our beachside up to date so that if one does pop up there again they will call me and hopefully I can get there in time to see it.

Lysa, having grown up just south of you in Brevard county, I never knew whales to come into an area so close to sure on the east coast. Great pictures. I used to see the incoming turtles but never whales.

Lysa,

I love whales! I have never seen any, but that is so cool that you have your whales friends keep you posted so you can try to get some shots. :)

Neal, You're a nut!

Gary, The whales don't often make it that far south, that may be why you didn't know about them. I haven't seen the turtles yet, except at the rehab place in Ponce Inlet. One day I would love to see the hatchling's making their way to the ocean tho.

Suzanne, You're not all to far from their summer play grounds! There is an island they love to hang out at not to far from Nova Scotia, but I can't think of the name now, my whale friends all went there a year ago for a working vacation.

Lysa - This is very cool and exciting!  Thanks for the pictures and information keeping us updated.  I've seen whales on tours in Maui, Hi and Gloucester, MA, but never in a million years would have thought FL!  Very cool!

Jackie, I never thought whales here either until I saw my first one! You can't imagine how excited I was :) Seeing one out of 350 existing animals in the ocean...   How lucky I was? Something I'll never forget!

Matt, They rarely make it as far south as you that's why you probably never heard about them. Two or three years ago a mom and calf did make into the gulf tho, so keep your eyes and ears open!

Lysa, love to see the whales. While we were in and around Quebec City, Canada this summer, we were able to see the whales. Very cool.

Teri, Whales are such amazing creatures aren't they? I know your area, you don't see many of them there. They only come to FL this time of year, I've not received another update on these two since i posted this, hopefully they are still around and they brought their friends!
