I tuned into FOX TV's new cop thriller, "K-ville" yesterday evening, and I was delighted to see an old friend, John Carroll Lynch, starring in a lead role (Captain James Embry).  John is a Guthrie Theater alumnus and colleague of mine from the 1990s and we worked together at the old Guthrie when the late Garland Wright was Artistic Director.  I was Music Director at the time I worked with John on Peter Weiss' Marat/Sade at the Guthrie in Minneapolis, Minnesota.

The New Guthrie Theater Building

You'll see a great many Guthrie alumni on television and in movies.  John appeared in the movie "Fargo", along with former Guthrie acting company members Bruce Bohne and Sally Wingert Bruce has also appeared on NBC's Law & Order series.

John Carroll Lynch's wife, actress Brenda Wehle, was also working at the Guthrie at the same time I was there.  The last time I ran into Brenda (eight or nine years ago) she was jogging on Madeline Island, near Big Bay State Park!  Brenda and John currently reside in Los Angeles.

The Guthrie has long been a magnet for top-quality actors and actresses from all over the United States.  Notable past members of the Guthrie acting company have included Hume Cronyn, Jessica Tandy, Peter Michael Goetz, Jerry Stiller, Zoe Caldwell and Joan van Ark.

Here's what a few other Guthrie colleagues from the 1980s and 1990s are doing now:

  • Don Cheadle has become a well-known television and movie actor.  He appeared in Oceans 11 (and in Oceans 12 & 13), alongside George Clooney.
  • Isabell Monk has appeared on The Equalizer
  • Lauren Tom has made many television and movie appearances, including Chicago Hope and Batman Beyond
  • Amy Aquino has made guest appearances on Shark, ER, Desperate Housewives, Boston Legal and CSI
  • Stephen Yoakam recently appeared in the movie Arnold's Park
  • Peter Thoemke was in the film Detective Fiction
  • Jacqueline Kim has made numerous appearances in film and on television, including The West Wing and ER

The Guthrie is our Minneapolis connection to Hollywood and Broadway, to film, television and touring theater.  Next time you attend a production at the Guthrie Theater, the chances are good you'll be watching future film and television stars!

10 Comments on Minneapolis Guthrie Theater Alumni Can be Seen All Over Television & Movies

Eric, this just makes the 6 degrees of separation theory that much more believable. Thanks for sharing.

Danny, it's a pleasure to see former colleagues go on to succeed at what they love to do.

Eric,

Isn't it cool when you get to see someone you know on TV.  My father in law was an actor and used to be on 'Guiding Light'.  One late night about a decade ago, I was switching through the stations and found Kojak stuffing him in the trunk of a car.

The Guthrie Theater looks like a great place.  Love the architecture.  Too bad its a bit of a commute for me to see.

(Thanks for commenting on my "Are You a BUT Person" post)

Eric, what an impressive building. We are rather spread out here in Redding, but I should take some architectural photos. New project. It is nice to see architecture. Thanks for the posts.

Martin -- Yes, it's fun to see old friends (and colleagues) on television and in the movies!

I met Telly Savalas ("Kojak") at the Humphrey Metrodome, in 1992.  I was working in the backup orchestra for the U.S. Special Olympics, and the celebrities present included Prince, Kirstie Alley and, among others, "Kojak".  Savalas was married to Julie Hovland, who is from Minnesota.  And he was also godfather to actress Jennifer Aniston.

He never mentioned anything about stuffing your father-in-law into a trunk, but he should have apologized..

Jeanean, the architect for the new Guthrie building was Jean Nouvel.  The new theater has the same "thrust" stage as the original Guthrie.

Eric,

I love to name drop and love to hear who other people know.  I think it makes life fun!  You are very connected to the arts; how wonderful and I would love to see your listing presentation...showmanship probably helps you every day.

Thanks for sharing the photo.

Karen, I loved your most recent post, http://activerain.com/blogsview/305734/Try-this-it-is

about the educational/reading level of various blogs!  Everyone on AR should be reading your post and they should also try putting their blog to the test.

Being connected with the arts community has been helpful in my work.  People used to ask me how I chose such a different career, going from the arts to real estate.  I've learned it can be an advantage.

No appolgy necessary.  Actually, there were a few times I considered stuffing him in the trunk.  (No not really.... but it IS a good line... no?).

I never met Telly... but I did meet my father in law.

:-)

Martin, they're running "Kojak" episodes on Netflix now.  Watching them is like climbing into a time machine!
