As first-time homebuyers, buying your first home is one of the most exciting times in your life.  Unfortunately, your first dream home may not come with a dream budget for decorating.  But that doesn’t mean that there aren’t things you can do to make the home beautiful, welcoming, and uniquely your own.

1.  Space out your purchases

While it’s tempting to furnish your entire house right at the beginning, it’s more budget-friendly to space out your large purchases over several months.  Give yourself some time to see what rooms you use most, and then spread your budget out accordingly.

2.  It doesn’t have to match

Your home doesn’t have to be matchy-matchy like a showroom floor.  You can buy mix and match pieces and different stores, and at different price points, to create a unique, beautiful home that reflects your style, not that of the showroom stylist.

3.  Shop discount

You don’t have to give all your money to the big box retailers who entice you with loud commercials and colorful flyers.  Consider visiting a local consignment shop or flea market for well-maintained, one-of-a-kind pieces.   As first-time homebuyers, don’t take second-hand furniture at face value — a little work refurbishing an end table or a few chairs can go a long way, and help to keep your budget in check.

4.  Use inexpensive solutions

Everything doesn’t necessarily have to be ripped out and remodelled.  Drab kitchen cabinets can be made to look fresh and new with a coat of paint and new doorknobs.  Inexpensive drapes and a coat of paint can create a room where your old furniture looks fresh.  Changing a light fixture can brighten a room in more ways than one.

5.  Accessorize

Low-cost accessories can give new life to old furniture.  New pillows on your sofa, a new duvet cover on your bed or a new runner on your dining room table can change the freshen the look of your furniture without breaking the bank.

A small budget that doesn’t have to spoil the excitement of owning your first home. Use these tips to help you create a fresh new space for a fresh new start.
