Are You As Secure As You Think You Are?

We're talking about home security here.
Guess what brought it to the forefront of our minds is that a few weeks ago we had an uninvited guest cruise through our backyard. Not an appealing thought as we got up and saw the footprints of the intruder in the snow.  We found out from neighbours later that cabanas and sheds were checked out for valuable items and taken.

We always felt safe in our neighbourhood.
Yes, we have and use a security system, but we used it only when we were away from the house.  Since discovering the footprints a little too close for comfort we have now been using the system even when we are home. Probably a good idea for anybody with a system. Yes we know it can be inconvenient, we have set the horns blasting a few times as we adjust to the fact you can't just open doors and windows without checking.

It occured to us today that one of our alarm panels is in full view from the glassed front door.
Who cares? Well the little green light means go and the little red one means stop and if it is in plain view of a would be intruder, well, what good is it? They know whether your security alarm is set or not.

Just thinking out loud here but maybe for those of you with panels in view like ours
, you should cover those lights with tape or something for added security.  Why advertise that the alarm is off when you have forgotten to turn it on!

A&P - I can imagine your heart rate went up when you saw the footprints.  Yep I'm all for a home security system and all other measures to protect our family and property.

Those would not be welcome at any time. Time to get a panel that has a cover that needs to be lifted to make an entry, that way the lights cannpt be seen.

Yes John it was thumping like a dog's tail waiting to go for a walk!

Our panel has a cover but it goes down over the key pad and not the light section Ed! You can bet its taped now and always on! So the intruder will always see red.

Al/Peggy, Good to hear that you covered the panel and how frightening it must have been for you...leaving the alarm on all the time now makes sense!

Al/Peggy...that would have scared the daylights out of me.  If someone wants in bad enough they will find a way but there's no reason we should make it easy for them.  Good post.

It really is a just added safety measure and when we 'trip' it in error, and someone calls us, its confirmation and nice to know there really is someone watching.

It did Anita, especially since we slept right through the visit!! Guess we didn't have anything useful to them!

Al and Peggy I have lived in my house for 31 years and have never had a problem, but you are right, you never know when the first time will happen.

Al & Peggy, I often set ours even when we are home and going to sleep, I set it to recognize our motions inside but keep out intruders from outside.

Al & Peggy, great point...shouldn't make it any easier for the opportunist...now that's a watered down word for a low life isn't it!  Anyway, not a lot of foot prints around my neighborhood that don't belong...most people including myself here in Alabama always have a gun close at hand and everyone knows it, but there is the occasional idiot!
