Today we're reviewing another quick, inexpensive lunch option for our Bellevue real estate students: Taqueria El Rinconsito. Located in an unassuming strip mall just a few blocks from our office, El Rinconsito is a very casual eatery, complete with blaring music and fast-food restaurant plastic booth seating. But what it lacks in atmosphere, it makes up for in flavor, featuring a large menu of authentic, tasty Mexican fare. Our standby orders include the carne asada (grilled steak) soft tacos and the carnitas (fried pork) burrito, but other favorite dishes include the mulitas (two flat fried corn tortillas stuffed with meat, jack cheese, and avocado) and the carne asada plate (grilled skirt steak with rice, beans, guacamole, and tortillas). If you're feeling adventurous, opt for the lengua (tongue) tacos, menudo (hominy and tripe soup), or sopitos (corn cakes topped with meat, beans, Mexican cream, and Mexican cheese). Most dishes are accompanied by a grilled onion and jalapeno pepper, and the self-serve salsa bar features six tasty options (with varying heat levels), plus pickled vegetables and peppers.
Instead of a standard soft drink, try the horchata (rice milk with cinnamon) or a mango- or tamarind-flavored agua fresca. Dessert options include churros (cinnamon doughnut-like pastries), flan (caramel custard), and cheesecake.
Prices are incredibly low: most dishes are well under $10.00 and a single taco will run you a mere $1.25.
Taqueria El Rinconsito is located at 2255 140th NE Ave. Bellevue, 98005. (Phone: 425-641-2524; website: www.elrinconsito.com.)
