Logo for Habitat for Humanity of WVAlmost Heaven Habitat for Humanity has started building another house in Greenbrier County.  The house is located at 102 Barton Road, White Sulphur Springs, WV.

  • On February 1, 2012, Almost Heaven Habitat for Humanity broke ground in partnership with Colette Godfrey and her family.
  • On February 18th,  team members at Lewis Nissan in Beckley, WV, and some community volunteers helped frame the walls.
  • On Saturday, March 3rd, Collette Godfrey (future Habitat homeowner), and her son Deshaunte, and fifteen other volunteers, joined together to raise the walls.

Almost Heaven Habitat for Humanity has been building houses in West Virginia for 25 years. Over time, their mission evolved in a significant way. They not only aspire to end poverty housing in West Virigina, but also to prove that "green" homes are within the reach, and in fact, practical for low-income families.

"A lot of times we don't think about the 'operating' costs of our homes," John Connor, the director of development for Almost Heaven Habitat for Humanity said last Saturday. "Every month you sit down and pay your gas bill, your electric bill, so any time we can build in energy efficient or resource efficient features, good things come of that.  Almost Heaven Habitat for Humanity has embraced that concept for many, many years. All of our homes are built to EPA standards and we take it one step further and build them to EarthCraft standards."  Colette Godfrey's future home is one of these houses.

Local Greenbrier County residents, Habitat staff, and Colette's family spent the day making large sip panels stand vertical. By the end of the day, all of the outside walls had been raised, and some inside ones, too.

In the morning, everyone had gathered in a circle to celebrate Colette, her son,  and their house. It was cloudy and rain threatened. Michelle Connor, the executive director of Almost Heaven Habitat for Humanity, addressed the small crowd. "God reaches down with his finger. We would be very remiss this morning if we did not stop to think about the effort that God has put forward to bring people out today on this chilly morning and agreeing to brave the weather."

By the end of the day, the sun was out, the walls were raised, and Colette was smiling.

If you want to pay it forward.....please volunteer!  The building site is at 102 Barton Road, White Sulphur Springs. WV.   For more information or questions, call Elisabeth McGuirk at 973-204-9374, or  email Elisabeth.   Directions to 102 Barton Road

Howdy and evening Rebecca

Rebecca my friend
, Almost Heaven Habitat for Humanity sure is such a mighty fine organization, along with the many folks which take the time to Volunteer sure do a whole lot of good for others!

I sure like the fact that they build the homes to both the standards of the EPA and Earth Craft. The folks which move into the home sure know they have a mighty fine home to enjoy living in.

Have a good one

John, H4H is a great way to pay it forward.  I helped last year on the Women's Build House, hard work but so satisfying.

Marge, the best part is seeing the future home owner working side by side with other volunteers and seeing her smile knowing it will be hers soon.

Laura, yes it is so rewarding.

Nick, good for you helping a local chapter...perhaps you could get other Realtors to volunteer.

Dale, EPA and Earth Craft standards...the way to go!
