Here's a fabulous gift idea for someone who enjoys berry picking and making preserves..The Great Lakes Berry Book (by Bob Krumm) is a complete guide to finding and enjoying wild berries found in the Great Lakes region.

This book is a must for berry-pickers!  It includes identifying photos to assist in finding a particular berry.

[NOTE: There's also a very useful section on what berries NOT to pick!]

My favorite berry in the book is, of course, the Thimbleberry, which is native to Madeline Island, the Michigan Upper Peninsula and a few areas in extreme northeastern Minnesota and bordering Ontario.  If you haven't tried thimbleberries, you should!  The fruit is slightly paler than a raspberry, with soft cells that are plump and large.  The fruit is a bit more tart than raspberries, but they make great preserves.

Krumm includes 115 berry recipes, including Thimbleberry jam, Currant jelly (and Currant pie), Raspberry Kuchen, Wild Strawberry ice cream pie and Blackberries in Framboise.  And there's a helpful calendar in the back of the book, to remind you when your favorite berries will be in season.

The berry picking in the Apostle Islands area is excellent.  You'll enjoy this book for years and years!

Hi Eric,

I can't wait for that book to come out! I grew up in Michigan and berry picking was one of my favorite pastimes. Have you ever tasted the most delightful wintergreen berry? It is bright red and you can pick it in the late fall and early winter. It is very white on the inside and has a very delicate taste; a faint bit like wintergreen. The leaves are shiny and very dark green---lovely.

Also, the black cap was my absolute favorite---some people called it black raspberry but it was much smaller than a raspberry. It also had a very strong berry flavor, much stronger and sweeter than you would expect from such a small berry. It was easy to pick because it would come off the stem really easy and it looked just like a cap when picked...very black too.

I also love thimble-berries; we used to pick them just before the blackberries were ready---delicious!

I was fortunate enough to have had a Father who was a Horticulturist and he informed us about all the berries that grew locally...Some were deadly if you ate the wrong ones so we paid close attention.

Thanks for letting us know about it!!

Paula, the Great Lakes Berry Book is published by Falcon Press in Helena Montana.  It's one of the "Falcon Field Guide" series and the coyright date is 1996.

I know it's in print.  Amazon probably has it.  The Library of Congress Number is 96-85106.  If you have trouble finding it, let me know.  The Mission Hill Coffee House in LaPointe (on Madeline Island) sells it.

Thank you so much Eric--I will get it for my family for Christmas. You have gone over the top with your helpful information. I hope I can find it here--if not, I am sure they will order it for me. I will be going to New Hampshire for the Holidays and will take it with me....I have neices and nephews who did not get to experience this aspect of life in the country--they are going to love it!

Wow, Paula, I wasn't intending to selll the book, but I think it will make a neat present.  Your family will really enjoy it!  I love nature guides like this one.  It's becoming a lost art to be able to identify native plants, flowers and edible berries in the wild.
