Osprey Spring 2012

Every year as the weather warms the Osprey return to their nests at the Occoquan Bay Wildlife Refuge (OBWR).  So far this year I've spotted 3 nesting pairs.  This pair was busy both building the nest and fishing for dinner in the Occoquan River.  The OBWR is located in Woodbridge just off Route 1 and Dawson Beach Road.  The refuge is known for it's birding and especially for the population of Osprey.  This pair was one of three I spotted yesterday.

In June 2010 after a big wind storm the most prominent nest at the entrance to the park was blown down.  The 3 chicks in the nest fell almost 100 feet to the ground.  Foruntately they all survived and were transported by the Raptor Conservancy of Virginia to Northern Neck to be raised.  As an official Osprey Watcher I'm current watching and recording nest #492 on a nesting platform in the OBWR.  I'll be adding the other two nests  spotted yesterday to the watch list as well.

Love the fact that you are an official osprey watcher. They are some of my favorite birds. I so enjoy posts from agents  that give me a bit of what they love. Thanks Cindy

Barbara Jo-I'm fortunate to live in Osprey country.  I'm waiting for the two pairs that usually build their nests on the "no wake" signs in my neighborhood.

Paula-I enjoy documenting what one or two of the nesting pairs in the park are doing.  I may add the pair who nest on the "no wake" sign if they come back again this year.

Andrew-the one on the ground was unusual.  They had a fish and didn't want to share with their mate in the tree.  He was watching intently for any intruders though.

The birds of prey are so graceful when they soar on the currents looking for food. Enjoy the watch

Hi Cindy, Great capture for sure. I love the feeling you get when being able to capture these. I think it is the part we talk about least but it is a thrill, isn't it.

William-I had to sit still on the ground to get the Osprey in the tree to stay put.  He was on high alert for any movement.

Hi Cindy - It's a bit early for the Ospreys to return here - at least I haven't spotted any fishing in our lake or in the one nest I keep an eye on, but we've got several hundred ducks spending a few weeks with us on their way north - mostly red-headed and buffleheads with a few tufted thrown in, and the gulls showed up a couple of days ago.

Tanja-it's fun to take a bit of time every week and record what is going on with the growing population of Osprey.

Dick-watched two more pairs today on the river.  They were getting into a dustup with a couple of persistent crows.

Steve-they are bigger than most of the other birds in the refuge.  We have a big population of Bald Eagles on the other side of the river and when you see them close together you realize how much smaller the Osprey are.
