Trends, Fads, & Mistakes

Have you ever been frustrated by a trend? Some new idea will explode into the media and become the most popular item on the market. But just as fast as it shows up on the scene it dies out overnight. You haven’t even been to the store to join the fad, or worse you’ve acted to quickly and now you’re stuck with a jersey of a basketball player that sucks (Lin-Sanity). Our culture LOVES a good fad but they seem to happen impulsively and often collapse faster than they grew in popularity. The good classic trends live on. They travel through the ages without a glitch. For example; Facebook, Brad Pitt, The Beatles, skinny jeans, Breakfast at Tiffany’s (Audrey Hepburn wore skinny jeans), personal computers, seat belts, The Honey Badger, online shopping, etc.

They are those tried and true trends that will always be solid. But there are just as many mistake trends that we will never revisit like the skort, Vanilla Ice, Heely’s, Danica Patrick, the shake weight, words with friends (everyone cheats in that game), the snuggie, Justin Bieber, bennnie babies etc.

We just get so excited about new things. We jump in two feet and before we can even process things the fad is over, and your short $100. We live in a generation where you can have almost anything you want without the wait. You can get on amazon prime, google, pick up your smart phone and you instantly have answers to your questions or packages delivered to your door. Our generation has no handle on delayed gratification. I’m not even sure if they could define that phrase if I asked them.  Stepping back, searching, waiting patiently, and asking for other opinions are all steps rarely used in our daily process these days. I challenge you to think about that. How long has it been since you’ve experienced delayed gratification? Do you always end up jumping on the band wagon too quickly?

With my recent posts on renovations I’ve been thinking a lot about my decision making. I can be incredible indecisive about things.  I usually know what I want but I can’t always tell you what that is, I have to find it! Remolding our kitchen has been exciting but also stressful. There have been many delays and it’s usually because I can’t decide on something.

Impulsivity, although fun, can be expensive when it comes to remodel. I think it’s important when choosing more permanent things such as wall placement, cabinet color, floor material, and countertops. Those decisions should always lean more towards a neutral or a classic option. Paint and decoration can always be easily changed and personalized but kitchen cabinets, not so much. Remember when avocado green was the fad for appliance color? Don’t ever say the 70’s didn’t give us anything.

There should be personality to your space but remember not to get caught up in a trend. Always keep the tried and true in mind.
