Sometimes things need to be investigated even when they are only slightly cracked and leaking.
This flip was "totally renovated."
The house was built in 1953, a VERY good year!
That means the house is strongly built, solid, probably still full of things done in ways they don't do today. For instance, that drain line is cast iron, and empties into a larger tube that is both cast iron and concrete! The clean out has been replaced so it is plastic, and new, but that is one solid assembly! I always kid people and say their drain lines will probably survive the nuclear war, along with the roaches. Solid stuff!
They don't do it like that anymore!
Like I said, that was a VERY good year!
Turning on the dishwasher first, I went about looking at the house, outside and then in.
Coming in to the laundry new I noticed a puddle on the floor.
Looking at the new plumbing under the kitchen, the ceiling of the laundry room, the drain, everything - I could not find the source of the water!
Everything was dry!
What to do?
So I turned on the dishwasher again, and set it so it was just a little bit away from discharging the water.
Then I went into the laundry room.
Looking at everything there, I merely waited for the dishwasher to begin pumping out its water.
And there it was!
The back side of the drain line, above the clean-out port, was slightly cracked and leaking a bit.
Well, maybe this tube won't survive the nuclear war!
One by one, things in this house made in 1953 will be failing. This tubing at least is slightly cracked and leaking a bit. Here and there parts might need to be replaced with new stuff and plastic.
I UNDERSTAND COMPLETELY...
Could there be a metaphor here?
