I was at my local watering hole today. I needed to get my bet in on when the ice out would be. We can bet on a day and a 4 hour period.
A few of us were talking and finally a lady overhearing us asked what we were talking about the lake ice melting.
"Ice on the lakes doesn't melt." She said. (In total seriousness)
"Really?" said one of the patrons..."Then what happens to it?"
She said with a straight face.."It sinks to the bottom of the lake."
This brought on a whoop of laughter. "You are kidding..." Said the Bar keep.
"NO! It sinks to the bottom of the lake.!"
So the bar keep gave the lady a glass of water. Having her hold it he gently placed an ice cube in it..."Now, Why isn't the ice cube sinking?'
"Because it is a different kind of ice!" she said adamantly.
"What happens to all the fish under the ice when it sinks?" She was asked.
"Well, they get out of the way of course!" She was now becoming very agitated As everyone was almost rolling on the floor. I reached in my pocket and grabbed my new fishing license...I wrote down the number. Here, you call and get the DNR and get a letter from them saying that yes indeed the ice on lakes sinks and I will pay for your BAR TAB for the rest of the year.
"HA!" She said..."You will be sorry for this one." and out the door she went.
The Bar keep gave everyone a round on the house.
Just in case anyone is wondering, here is a picture of an ice chunk that was froze to the ground when the pond was low at my house. When it thawed enough to let go of the ground...up it came. Now, I have to make a print out for the bar keep in case she ever shows back up!
