Is your iPhone battery tired?

Is your battery tired?

I have had an iPhone in some version or another for quite some time now.  The longer I own each one, the faster the battery dies.  So I may be the only person who didn't know this, but when I mentioned it to a friend one day, he said, "Make sure you turn your apps off."

i phone faceGood advice, to be sure . . . if you know what it means or how to do it.  In total frustration because I was constantly having to charge my phone, I finally Googled something about turning off your iPhone apps.  If you know how, no need to read any further.  But if you, like me, were clueless, you are going to be so excited.

From your main screen on your iPhone, press your Home Button quickly two times (two times quickly?)  Across the bottom of your screen will appear your app icons.  If you slide that bottom bar, you will see that there may be more than one or two.  (Yes, I have some embarrassment factor in having had 62 open.)

Gently hold any key for a second or so until the icons do that cute little iPhone jiggle.  In the upper left corner of the icon will be a minus sign in a little red circle.  Touch the minus sign to close apps that are not currently in use.  When you're done with that, just press your Home Button and it will return you to your regularly scheduled programming.

Voila!  I have gotten in the habit of doing it each evening as I plug it in to recharge the battery.  I promise you, the battery is lasting a whole lot longer.

Mimi- ok... I have a Droid but there's sn app to do that as well.  Good point to pass along because battery life can be a killer, especially if you have all of these apps running in the background.

And I'd love to know how to do that on my Droid. I really need to check it out.

I got an extended battery for my droid and can run a lot of apps but I do turn off what I am not using.  My battery usually lasts 24 hours or more.

Meems - I also have the Droid but reading Kathy's comment sounds like there's an app which I'll have to check out. Happy St. Patrick's Day. I'm actually getting together with my 2 best friends from high school. About once a month we get together after we reunited on FB a year ago. We have the best time! Tomorrow will be my first day off since I got back from Sedona and I can't wait to do something fun!

I have the same issue with my battery. I turned off the automatic checking of my emails - now it only checks it when I 'update', I have additional location (esp your built in GPS service will suck the life out of your battery) and push services turned off, you could reduce screen brightness...those are little things but they might help as well.

Thanks for the reminder

Mimi, its amazing how many applications can be open and running on our phones without our knowledge.  I have a Droid and use an app called Advanced Task Killer to turn off those apps I'm not using.  My phone's nearly 2 years old so the battery dies halfway through the day if I don't use ATK.  Some days I could use an app to recharge my internal battery LOL.

Hi Mimi--I just followed your instructions and was amazed to find out how many apps were open on my iPhone.  I am constantly charging the battery, so will be delighted to do this to extend the life.  Thanks.

Mimi, that is good to know. I've decided to convert to an iPhone at the end of the month when my contract expires.

Hi Mimi, my wife and I learned about this little battery saver a couple of months ago.  One would think Apple would promote this energy saver a little better.

I have had all the iPhones from day one and never tried this trick on the Apps off, and will have to give it a try Mimi. With AT&T service I leave it in EDGE for voice unless I need the web and then I momentarily go into 3G. That is the huge difference in the battery saver I have found.

I bought my iPhone from Verizon since they gave me a $50.00 credit. While I was in the Apple store buying an iPad, the salesperson showed me this "trick" and I have passed it on to all of my iPhone friends. It works!!
