The greening of Alameda

One step in the greening of Alameda begins next year when every store selling packaged food in Alameda and the other 13 cities in Alameda County will not be able to provide single-use bags to their customers. By virtue of this ordinance Alameda County Waste Management Authority has taken a giant step toward becoming a greener place.  The Alameda County ordinance would prohibit use of single use plastic bags at the point of sale, that is the check out counter.

No single use plastic bags allowedThe object of the ordinance is to reduce waste that would eventually go to landfills and waterways and  would also save Alameda and other cities money by reducing litter. The ordinance prohibiting single-use bags goes into effect on January 1, 2013.

Trader Joe's reuseable grocery bagRetailers will be able to provide recycled and reusable bags, but only at a minimum cost of $0.10 per bag.  If the county board determines that the $0.10 charge does not effectively discourage single use bags, the Waste Management Authority can raise the bag fee to $0.25.

The greening of Alameda was lead by Gary Wolff, StopWaste.org’s executive director.   StopWaste.org is the Alameda County Waste Management Authority and the Alameda County Source Reduction and Recycling Board operating as one public agency.  The goal of the Authority is to “promote sustainable consumption and disposal patterns” and advance the greening of Alameda.

This is another reason why California is broke, and people are leaving because o the silliness of taxes like this. Sorry, this whole green thing is the biggest fraud in American History, that's my opinion and many million others.

Winston:

Sorry you feel that way, but the Bay is vital to a number of industries and the people who live here.  It is also important for our way of life.  So keeping it clean is not silly.

Hi Evelyn --- while California certainly has its issues and problems, I don't think this is one of those that is working as a determent to the state.   While the advantages may not be significant, I think the message is important.

Yes, we certainly do have issues.  Carole Rodoni, an economist was in our office yesterday adn she was very positive about California's future.  I hope she is correct.

Evelyn, Interesting concept. We use recycled totes for most of our shopping and are seeing more and more other consumers doing the same...

Pacita:  I have dozens of bags in my car and I actually use them(when I remember).

Larry & Sheila:  Yes, using recycled totes is the best thing to do.  I hate the plastic bags, they seem to reproduce in drawer I keep them in.

This is great news, Evelyn.  Santa Monica is already there and we are waiting for the rest of L.A. County to go the same way.

I think so too.  It is one of the few things we can do that requires very little effort.  I have been using reusable bags for years.  I don't like the plastic bags anyway.
