Well, well, well.  It's the end of the year.  My desk, up until yesterday, was a complete and total disaster--according to my broker.  That's what he thought and that's actually what it looked like.  I was gently asked to please clean up the mess.  BUT I knew where everything was and could locate anything requested in a timely manner--usually under a minute.  Now, though, it's the end of the year and I've decided to put it to rights and organize.  So I just cleaned everything out, threw things away that I was just keeping for no apparent reason, dumped a BUNCH of stuff in my car, and am a good ways into organizing...

But, the real story is:  I have been told that a disoganized desk is one of the signs of a disorganized mind.  I agree and disagree with that statement.  Could it also mean that the agent that has a messy desk is actually a producer and, being busy, just makes stacks of active, pending, dead, and closed files?  Then, goes home at the end of the day tired and doesn't have the time or energy to keep the desk neat?  I was at another office within my company today and talked to a "producer" whose volume is around $10 mil.  She has not one but TWO desks that one could say are messy.  But I spoke with her today and she, too, knows what each stack contains and is on track to clean up the desks this month.

You know when you can't think of anything cool to say just in the moment but you think and think and come up with the EXACTLY right thing to say--but it's a few days later?!  Well, once I get my desk put back together and organized, I'll be happy.  Then, I'll get busy again and the desk may get messy again.  When I am gently reminded that "a disorganized desk is a sign of a disorganized mind," then I'll be able to say---"Well, then what does an empty desk mean?!"  LOL.  Hope that's a good thought for the day for you.

Not so, most of the top agents have messy desks.  They usually have their "files" in order and know where things are.

I'm not neat.  Typcially if I clean my desk people worry that I'm quitting!

Lisa - I was always told that a disorganized desk is a sign of genius!  LOL  When my hubby goes behind me and files everything and puts stuff away is when I get lost!

Judi-

He he.  Me, too.  I just tend to gather "stuff."  Most of it is important.  I want to keep it.  It doesn't bother me.  Plus, if I'm at my desk, I'm not making money...

Thank you for your comment.

Even though I tend to be a little OCD when it comes to organization, I know firsthand that when I am busy my desk is messy. Your broker should be happy your busy!

Carol C.-

Yep, it's GOOD to have a colorful desk, right?!  And, what WAS put away was organized to the Nth degree--books organized according to height and content, nice-looking (but cheap) in/out file organizers, pens held nicely in whatever free advertising cups from various service providers...  It's just that, there were PILES/STACKS of actual business sitting there with no apparent home.

One of my former bosses used to have a sign on his desk that said "A clean desk is the sign of a sick mind"

Just a thought!

I have always been an organized person trapped in an unorganized persons body......and my desk shows it....

Konnie-

Me, too.  Now, my desk is organized--but my CAR, with all my stuff in it, needs to be cleaned out now!  Thank you for your comment.

Lisa, My desk is periodically messy and then I'll straighten it out, but it'll be messy again within no time.  Hope you enjoy your new desk.  Did Tom really say that to you?

Marc-

Tom didn't actually say THAT to me.  He really, very gently indicated that I needed to straighten it up.  Turns out, I have and I'm enjoying my much larger desk now.  :)  It's clean ATM.

I don't have time to look up the exact quote, but so I am paraphrasing here: "One must have chaos in one's heart to be able to give birth to a dancing star..." or something along those lines. I think most of my life has been recorded and organized on paper napkins, and backs of envelopes, and yet, I can still recall where everything is or was and find what I am looking fore. Sure it looks messy from the outside, but it's the only way I can comfortably find my way around....

Not that I am great or anything, I am certainly not; i just thing that sometimes squeaky clean and organized can mean a sterile mind according to the same principles of logic employed by your broker... in chiding you to 'organize'...
:-)
