Students and Retirement Community Residents Bridge Generation Gap at Sunday Pool Party

From Asbury Methodist Village:

Gaithersburg High School students will join Asbury Methodist Village residents for a most unusual party on Sunday, March 18 from 1:30 to 4 p.m. at the Rosborough Cultural Arts and Wellness Center on Asbury’s campus. Poolside mini-golf, paddle boats, water volleyball, Wii bowling, and other games round out the entertainment planned for the first event hosted by the Beloved Community project, a joint venture being spearheaded by Asbury resident Rev. Hal Garman, Wesley Theological Seminary Urban Ministries program student Jameson McLaughlin, the liaison between the Office of the County Executive and Montgomery County’s faith communities Tim Warner, and City of Gaithersburg officials.

Beloved Community grew out of the desires of Garman to see how Asbury Methodist Village residents could be of service to their neighbors, especially area youth. Last summer, McLaughlin surveyed area residents to identify areas of need and support services that could help them.

Sunday’s party marks the first significant event that has resulted from the project, and includes members of the City’s Student Union, a group of high school students who participate in after-school activities, community service projects and field trips throughout the year.  A second event is planned for April 21, with students and Asbury Methodist Village residents planting more than 40 trees at Gaithersburg’s Bohrer Park at Summit Hall Farm during the City’s Green Week celebration. Hi Roy, This sounds like it could have results even more beneficial than just the party. This is really about community and when people come together to play and do things that are fun in a relaxed atmosphere, it affects in such a positive way, the way the community buuilds on the enthusiasm for where people live..

It is sometimes a good practice to revisit old blogs and reblogs. We might even find some good ideas for current posts.
