Just a quick question for all of you...

For someone trying to stand out above the rest, and looking into continuing education that benefits more than just the continuing education requirements, are Designations worth it?

Ive spoken to several of my peers and get mixed views on the achievement of Designations...some say its a waste of money while others say its a wonderful way to prove your credibility etc...

What do you think?

Thanks!

I love to collect stuff, but along the way I found out the education and information and networking opportunities are what really counts.  Just got my GRI and waiting for my pin.  I am not choppin at the bit to put it on my cards, website etc.  BUT am very proud I went all the way to get it!! There has been quite a bit of discussion on this topic.  I am always interested in reading and hearing what other think about the designations.

Thanks Mary, I agree with you.  After looking into it, I know that the first GRI course of three can be counted towards my continuing education, but the other two do not.  How long did it take you to complete all three courses?

Hi Melanie, I would be proud as well!  Great job!  I firmly believe that designations put you above the rest in the industry not only with prospective clients but with your peers.  Thanks for the input and good luck!

I'm still working on the completion of all three, but it's often considered equal to having a masters in real estate.

I love continuing education.  And some of these would be like having a master's degree.  This is a goal I have, when I grow up.  They all cost lots of money, and when I can, I want to add some of these fancy letters to the end of my name as well.

In my opinion, the education is worth it but the designation is of very limited value.

Thanks for the post Don.  They do cost a lot of money thats for sure, do you know when we can have too many designations behind our names?  lol....Ive seen some Realtors with 5 or 6!  Does it almost reach the point of Diminishing Returns?

I think you need a select few based on your market.  Too many letters following your name and you look like your just chasing designations.  Do you know about QSC (Quaility Service Certified)? My Broker is requiring everyone on the relocation team to get the designation if you want to stay on the team.  Fortunately, I already have that one.
