You are NOT your house!!

By
Real Estate Agent with Jackson Realty Group 222208

I was talking with a woman recently and she and her husband are thinking about doing a short sale for their home they have been living in for many years. They have been homeowners for over 20 years and her husband lost his job and their income dropped drastically. He is working again but his income is significantly lower than what it used to be...

As she continued to talk and be brave, I stopped her and told her," You are NOT your house!"

What we have to remember as real estate agents is that behind every short sale and foreclosure is a human story. A family whose life looks and feels differently than it did before. A parent who has to tell her children that they have to leave the only home that they have known.

No one plans to move in a home and then short sale it latter. No one dreams of moving their children from their dream school.

So, to all those who are making the toughest decisions of their life, lift your head up high and think about your future. No matter what you experience in life, you can rebound from it. Credit can be repaired, debts can be repaid, and life does go on.

Your house may have to be sacrificed but know that no matter where you are, you can create memories if you are with loved ones and are safe and secure.

Let those thoughts penetrate your thinking and move forward. The future is where you are headed. Plan your next steps with care and you will see the rainbow at the other side.

What's IN the house is more important than the house itself!

Very inspirational! Thank you for the moving post! So many people that are faced with losing their home blame themselves and think that they are a failure.

The people in a house make a house "a home", so I'm right with you on this one. Good advice, and looking ahead is the answer. Where-ever a family lands next, they will start a new home, and realizing that can give people the will to get through their current situation and move on.

That's right Shanta.  Working short sales you become more humble and increase your compassion.  There was no way most of these short sales could of been prevented.  If you can get their short sale approved, they will always remember you!

Shanta, a few years back, our family sold the only home my kids had ever known and most of our worldly possessions. We bought an RV and hit the road. We lived in the 200-square foot home for almost two years. It was a wonderful experience for us. I know that's not the same as a short sale. The point is, as long as you're together that's all that matters. A house is just a house until a family makes is a home. That RV was our home and a good one at that.

Good attitude. In sad situations like this it is difficult to separate the people from their home. I also try to put the disappointment of "losing a home" into perspective. Their next home might not be a big or nice, but they won't be on the streets. Their home didn't burn down and they didn't lose everything they own. One of their family members was not murdered there, forcing them to move. It could be much, much worse.

It breaks my heart to see families losing their homes. Uprooting their families scrambling to find a decent rental. Our rental market has tightened, more stress for these folks. They have to rent on the spot or the next prospective tenant will take it.
