"Senioritis" - Suggestions For Helping Seniors from an SRES Designee

As an SRES Realtor, I find that it is important to help my senior clients and their family members to navigate the many essential steps involved in a late-in-life move. I tell my clients that this is especially true when carrying the weight of one's own needs along with those of the spouse or parent truly needing our help.

As a frequent volunteer with the Alzheimers' Association, I know that caring for an aging parent or spouse (whether or not they have Alzheimers' or other dementia) is a joy and a challenge both. Caring for a family member or parent who cannot safeguard their own assets or who are in a declining mental state requires skill, patience and a lot of energy and strength. Be aware of the toll it can take and be prepared to make time for yourself.

Exploring a durable power of attorney while the parent or spouse is still of sound mind is worth consideration.

Financially speaking, also, consider perhaps, forming a life estate and protecting the accounts and assets of the person in a declining mental state. Hiring someone to help care for the elder in need is a great solution if finances permit and eases the stress on family members.

Finding someone who can help that person keep his/her dignity throught is key. These tasks are difficult for most everyone, but a Realtor who is empathetic and helpful in providing local resources and experts to help with estate planning and care giving adds so much to the improve the dynamics.

To other SRES designees or to those who have assisted a parent or a senior client through a move recently, what are your tips and suggestions to add to the above?

Ellie, I am horrified by the stories I hear about Seniors being taken advantage of financially. It's great the you know how to advise them.

Connie, SRES has been a really informative designation and I've actually gotten referrals to wonderful seniors and their families as a result. So true that one wants to make sure the seniors' financial and emotional resources are safeguarded.
