Eli Magen, of Florida, put in a post today "Women likely to run out of money during Retirement  I thought it was very worthwhile reading and it brought to mind something else.  It is that the best thing we can provide our children, in my opinion, is independence.  That means, to me, children should come to adulthood with the ability to think, have a sense of accomplishment and be able to support themselves.

When I graduated from high school, it was very common to get married young.  I didn't know what I "wanted to be" so I went to business school.  After that, I worked for a very short time and then was married (at barely 20 yrs. old).  I went directly from my Mom and Dad's house to my husband's.  It was not a good thing to not even know if I could support myself.

A friend's father once told me that "women need insurance."  What he was talking about was the education, skills and work experience in case something should happen to their husband.  When we continue to have a 50% divorce rate in this country, this is still applicable.

I finished college after I had children and was able to get a good job.  It would have been so much better for me to have been out on my own learning how to live life.

How can we teach independence to our children?
