On Saturday December 1st as temperatures dipped into the low 30's my 8 year old informed me that his teacher said it was going to snow over the weekend.  We had been hearing about snow most of the week and it had failed to fall so I didn't put to much stock into his teachers prediction.

But......about 2pm it started falling.     After just a few minutes the ground was covered and it began sticking to the roads.  When it snows in Washington it's very beautiful, but we have a lot of hills and elevated roadways and it's gets pretty hairy....fast!!  We were at my sons basketball game and it kept coming down and before it finally ended about 5pm we got around 4".  But it wasn't done yet.  My daughter and I went to Costco in her car (a little Mazda Protege') and after being in the store an hour and a half we were greeted by serious snow fall.  I was a little nervous driving her car (I'm used to my Tahoe and have no problems getting around) but it was either me or let her drive and I wasn't ready to give a snow driving lesson!  We made it home and by nights end we had gotten 6".  While we were at Costco my husband and sons built a snowman and had a serious snowball fight!

The measurable snowfall varied in different parts of Western Washington.  From 10" in Hoodsport on the coast to 18" in the mountains.  Skiers were getting excited!!  Well....the snow didn't last.  Unfortunately right behind the cold front was the Pineapple Express.  This is where warm air from Hawaii moves in and warms the temperatures up.  There was a flood warning in affect for most of Western Washington because all the snow that had just fallen in the mountains and at sea level would now melt and have to go somewhere.  And in addition to the snow and rain there was to be wind with gusts up to 50mph.

During the wee hours of the morning on December 3rd the rain started falling.  And if was relentless.  Reports showed we received 4.5-6" of rain in a twenty four hour period.  Add that to the snow we received Saturday and the freezing levels in the mountains rising to 10k feet and it spells disaster.

After dropping my boys off at school I ventured down to Woodinville and at 9:30am they already had one road closed and there was standing water under the trestle, which is also the main road in and out of Woodinville.  I made my way around the block and came upon what was starting to form a lake in the road on the other side of the trestle.  I managed to get out my phone and take some videos to show just how much water was pouring

onto the roadway.  King5 News got better footage  from the helicopter.  Amazingly enough, the following morning at 9:30am all that water was gone and all roads were open.  Before clearing all that water though, 14 roads in and around Woodinville were closed.  I was at Target and when I came out at 2:30pm it took me until 4:15pm to go 5 or 6miles to my home.  What I didn't know at the time was that Hwy 522 was also under water in one section, so we had to go way north to get on I405 and then head south to get back to my house!!  What an ordeal.

Part 2 tomorrow......the devastation throughout Western Washington!

December has really been interesing this year so far, hopefully it does not get even more interesting with a power outage like last years!

I hope your home was OK from the second highest record rain fall...I had 4 inches of water on my patio and some water in my basement garage.  The TV news stations did a very good job covering the rain and flooding.  I watched the coverage of all the water that caused the long trip home for you, that must have been frustrating.

Hi Sandy,  There are advantages to living in such a beautiful state such as Washington and there are disadvantages.  I guess you get used to them.  The snow must be beautiful.  The melt is not so nice.

I love the snow - actually I get just as excited about a snow day as my daughter.  She is probably the reason I get excited because she is still young - it give us some great times together.  ENJOY the snow.

SANDY:  I know what you mean about things happening quickly.  We had some serious ice storm last night.  This morning, I could barely get down my driveway, and it took my 20 minutes to chip away the ice from the windows so that I could take my son to school.  One of the doors to the mini van froze shut also.  Our driveway is steep, and it's still a mess.  They're calling for a Noreaster this weekend, but now they're saying more rain than snow.  I love winter also, but the snow makes things very tough, especially when you get caught unprepared as you were with the Mazda.  I hope that everything is good with you now.

Sandy - That is a LOT of water!  I'm glad everyone in your neck of the woods is okay.  Once, a huge ice storm struck while I was at the office, and it took me 3 1/2 hours to get home (normally about 40 minutes).

Sandy, I don't miss that weather at all!!  Pittsburgh is having similar problems and my friends have been sending me pictures and we have been watching it on their news.  I guess tonight into tomorrow should bring them freezing rain (just in time for the Steelers game tomorrow).  I am so glad I am here in Vegas, although it is cold but no rain or snow.  Glad that you are safe.  Talk to you soon!

Deborah I hope you dried out OK and no I don't want a repeat of last years power outage!  We were out from Thursday night until Sunday afternoon.  Our biggest challenge was keeping my sons snake warm!!  It was crazy and a little frustrating getting home after this years rain storm, but I knew my kids were safe so I tried to just relax, listen to Christmas music and know I'd get there when I could.  Thanks for stopping by and commenting.

Pam thank you for your prayers.  We are all safe and dry, but there are many especially in Lewis County that are still trying to dry out and clean up.

Kay it is very beautiful here when it snows.  Much like a postcard.  But it tends to wreck havoc since many people don't know how to drive in it and it usually rains first then gets colder and snows so we typically get a sheet of ice under the snow.  It gets tricky!  Thanks for commenting!

Vincent sounds like you hope for those snow days!  They are fun, but I prefer to keep the snow in the mountains where it doesn't cause such problems for the folks who don't know how to get around.  Thanks for stopping by.

Adam I hope you've gotten through your deep freeze.  What a morning.  Stay safe and yes we are all OK.  Thanks for commenting.  PS it's good to see you back too!

Jason thanks for reading!  I think the worst storm we've had was back in 1995 I think it was.  We were in a literal deep freeze for a week.  I was working at a Montessori school then and it took some parents 10 hours to get their kids and most parents had less then 10 miles to travel to get there!  3.5 hours is a long time too when your used to 40 minutes!!  Thanks for reading!

Roberta  thanks for stopping in!  I tell you when things like this happen I long for the warmth and sun of somewhere like San Diego!  I will say a prayer for your friends safety during their crazy weather!
