I like reading Ophra's "What I know for sure" at the end of her magazine.  It helps me remember to keep things in prospective.

What I know for sure about real estate is that nothing is for sure.  I can't count on re-listing the house just because I sold it.  I can't count on the seller re-listing with me when the house does not sell and the listing agreement expires.  I can't count on the buyer finding another Realtor to show them a property or write an offer.  I can't count on being a REALTOR for life or any referrals.

What I know for sure is that I must get off my real estate and make sure that I get that listing, or make sure the seller knows that I want to sell their house and I will work hard to do so.  I need to make sure the buyer knows that I am willing to show them properties until we find what they are looking for and I will write the offer for them and negotiate until we have a ratified contract.  I have to ask for referrals and I have to continue to keep in touch with previous sellers and previous buyers so that I remain top of mind.

These are simple things but what I know for sure.

Exactly Brian!  I am not perfect but I try to work toward progess and occassionally I lose a client because I did not keep in touch like I should have and I continue to refine my routine to tighten up and keep in touch.  By developing systems it becomes automatic and I don't have to think about it, it comes naturally.

Well said Nannette. Far too many people become complacent and feel they'll get the business regardless. With your attitude if you don't get the business it won't be from a lack of trying.

How true, Nannette!  Those personal contacts, in addition to all the other methods are critical from turning someone in to your Sphere of influence database to your "sold clients" database.
