Google Zeitgeist 2007

Google has just released their Google Zeitgeist 2007 Report

This report includes a list of the most searched upon words during the past 12 months.

This report can give us a quick glimpse of the direction of global culture and where popular interest lies. At Google, the fastest growing terms globally were:

  1. iphone
  2. badoo
  3. facebook
  4. dailymotion
  5. webkinz
  6. youtube
  7. ebuddy
  8. second life
  9. hi5
  10. club penguin

After searching these terms myself, to me, there is one glaringly obvious strong common demonimator:  PERSONALIZED TECHNOLOGY

People want to be able to share and express themselves and connect with those like them. And technology is making this possible.

This can mean different things to all of us and perhaps there are many burgeoning applications in our industry.

That is really helpful. I am going to do more with facebook.  My grandkids are always on webkinz.  Thank you Kelly. Best to you in '08

I had not even heard of a few of the search terms. I too will look into Facebook. Pat, have you joined LinkedIn?  That may be worth looking into as well.  Best to you in '08 too-it promises to be an interesting year.

Now I just need to start a site that sells iphones on either badoo or facebook so I can check out the vid's on dailymotion while feeding my webkinz dog all the while making a video for youtube about ebuddy and second life and share it with people on hi5 and club penguin...

Chris,

Point taken. It is interesting though to see the relationship of these search terms: a hunger in the global population for on-line social networking communities, entertaining customized photos and videos of self and self expression, and customized technologies (avatars, customized ringtones, personal webspaces -myspace).

In reality, Active Rain is the embodiment of these trends.

Chris, love that response.  I thought it was pretty funny.  If you look at the trend though, we really need to capitalize as a consumer/user/member.  Youtube, YourSpace, YourBook all are nothing without its users' content and they are making Billions of dollars.  That's a capital "B".  mySpace was started with one person in a garage, and it was spread virally thru direct and referral marketing (word-of-mouth).

On another topic and not too different is Realtor.com capitalizing on the Realtors.  We provide content (our own MLS listings) and they charge us hundreds/thousands to upgrade to have multiple pictures.  Of course, I told them I didn't like what they were doing (as I fork over my credit card number paying them $2000 this year).  Oh well.
