The Village of Wellington is trying to keep our taxes low and yet not cut our recreational programs. Back at the end of September the Village voted unanimously to reduce our tax rate to the state-mandated level.  The council also reduced their budget for 2008 by $14 Million dollars.

The new tax rate will be $2.34 for every $1,000 of taxable value. This is down from $2.70. If you own a home with an assessed value of $325,000 with your homestead exemption on it you will pay $702 next year instead of $784 that you paid last year.

This tax rate is the lowest in the village since 2003. But they are raising some expenses like our garbage pick up and storm drainage and there may be some surcharges on recreational activities.

The Village of Wellington can also withdraw some money from their savings account to cover the deficit.

I have often wondered with the windfall they made with the increases in taxes because of  the increase in home values and the influx of homes being sold over the past years in the red hot market we just came out of; what the heck did they do with all that money? And what in the world is the Village of Wellington spending all the money on?

Katerina, I don't understand it myself.  They raise our taxes (Village) significantly every year and cut back on services.  Way back such as not sanding the roads or cleaning out the storm indrains (which caused my flooding).  Main Street is decorated, however.  I believe they need to spend wisely....

Our property taxes went down a little because our home exemption increased double (from 40k to 80k) On the other hand our Association keeps raising our fees every year. Just can't win.

Sally- Thanks for your comment on my localism post about taxes in Wellington Florida. I know what you mean, they get you one way or another in taxes. But we are still taxed less than most countries so that is a good thing! Katerina

Frank Rubi Kenner LA Homes for Sale

Frank- Yeah! That is what I want to know! 36% increase in home prices two years in a row and what did they do with all that money? It is not knowing or understand how much things should cost and how you can save money. Like during the summer they had a cleaning company go in the part bathrooms to clean them 3 times a day when NO one goes to the park here in the summer and 90 degree weather! Just an example on how they waste money! And then the cleaning agents were way more than what we pay to clean our bathrooms! Katerina

Matthew- They are not supposed to cut services. However they waste a lot of money on things connected to the services such as what I told Frank in my comment to him. You can have services by cutting back on waste spending. Personally, I never take my kids to a park in the summer heat and I see the parks all empty in the summers. Thanks for your comment. Bradenton Florida Real Estate - Dan Forbes REALTOR®

Well, the cut is not much but better than raising the taxes. They should have a huge surplus due to the 36% increases in home values and all the glut of tax money that came in due to the hot market we had. But they have a tendency to spend it instead of save it. The feds and county don't advocate saving. If you save and do not spend all the money than you don't get the funds from the county, state and feds. You should be rewarded for saving not punished! Katerina

Katerina, You've got to appreciate just how low your taxes are. In California, even though we had prop 13 tax limitation, our property taxes are at least four times as high as yours.

Those guys should be re-elected for sure.

Bill Roberts - "Baby Boomer" Retirement Planning

Bill- Yep, people here complain but I say, look at other states! Property taxes are much higher in many places. Although Georgia is much lower. Of course in California the income pay is higher, here it is very low. Katerina
