For your consideration: New real-estate term - Hondo

Working in luxury real estate, I have noticed a great number of terms being used that I like but that I think could be better. For instance, in the Winter 2008 issue of LuxuryRealEstate.com Magazine, I wrote an editorial on hotel condos. A hotel condo is a condominium located inside a hotel. People actually own their own hotel room and they can receive all the benefits of hotel living whenever they like. It's a great concept, really. While writing this editorial, I felt a little awkward naming this property type, so I decided to try coming up with a better name.

Condo hotel, hotel condo and condotel are all too long and don't really describe this property type particularly well. That's why I propose that this property type be known as Hondo. It sounds sleeker, plus it solves the problems inherent in the repeated vowel sounds in "condo hotel" and the clunky awkwardness of "condotel." I'm probably not the first to suggest this, but I thought I'd throw it out there anyway. I'll also hopefully suggest replacements for other terms in the future.

Hondo. What do you think?

Robert, I like the term you've coined!  I also like the concept.  Condo hotels are an appealing idea, particularly for boomers who like the convenience and amenities of a hotel stay.

Dear Eric,

Thank you very much! I definitely agree that these are some pretty awesome properties. I think the Baby Boomer generation is definitely going to give us some great luxury innovations as they retire and seek to uncomplicate their lives a bit. Thanks again for your feedback.

Sincerely,
Robert Lockard

I'm not so sure that will stick.  It sounds a lot like my car - a Honda.  Maybe if was living in my car I could call it a Hondo.  lol

Condotel works over here, and there are plenty of them.  In any case, it is great lifestyle concept.

Dear Georgina,

Excellent point, and nice sense of humor. :)

Living in a car is definitely less than luxurious. It's fun to think of more-creative terms for things. Like why is junk mail called spam? I haven't been able to figure that out yet. I think there's definitely a better term for that waiting to be suggested. Anyway, thanks for pointing out this potential flaw in Hondo.

Sincerely,
Robert Lockard

I agree with Georgina, I don't like Hondo. I do think there needs to be a distinction between a condo that is used as a hotel room and a condo that is separate, but shares facilities with a hotel.
