snowsled, 1966 johnson skee horse snowmobile, mooers realty, maine The Johnson Skee Horse like the one pictured from 1966 was a 14 horsepower screamer for the time.  As long as you were on a driveway, hard crust or a frozen lake, it ran super.  But due to the extreme weight, if you got off the trail in three feet of new white powder, you did not go far until you bottomed out and sunk.  Then it was wait until spring or coax one of my three older brothers to help me dig it out.  The sled had a habit of the throttle sticking so once went air borne over a wood pile and had to bail off...watching the sled head down the driveway to the busy US Rt 2 wondering if it would get hit.  It did not and by the time it crossed the road, the vibration caused the cold throttle cable to release.  Graduated to a 1967 Sno Jet made in Thetford Mines, Quebec because dad got tired of digging us out and hearing the complaints of the Skee Horse on an open field.  My Uncle Carl sold them and the 13.8 horsepower blue machine was much light, nimbler and I only had one complaint.  The Modern snowmobiles, snowsleds, maine, mooers realtycompression for an 11 year old was intense and as I cranked my heart out on the starter cord, it would recoil and put me hard into the engine casing, brusing fingers.  The addage for snowsledding in the 1960's was "You tinker for two hours to use it for one".  Learned alot about mechanics and patience.  No one went too far from the farm either as you did not want to get stranded.  As an adult, graduated to a Cobra Polaris that was uglier than sin but was a performer with its 440 air cooled engine.  Bought my first new sled in 1989 that was a Polaris 3 cylinder 650 that would fly. New sleds have wider tracks, wider ski stance, gas shocks and are built to move on new groomed trails.  There are 13,000 miles of snowsled trails to explore in Maine.  Nowadays, Yamaha, Ski Doo, Polaris and Artic Cat wrap up the field but when I was 10, there were 50 brands of snow machines to ride.  Here's the list.  New sleds are liquid cooled with radiators under your feet to keep them toasty along with electric thumb / handlebar warmers for your paws. But what if it won't run? Here's a site to trouble shoot and get the snowsled fired up and purring. Sand...hmmm...think I would invest in a sea doo.  They are fun and we have two of those too! Come up and check them out Sean! Sand not so great a lubricant for the slides on the track! Thanks for stopping in!

Actually a snowmobile will work on grass and on water, just dont try to stop.

Andrew, this post brings back so many memories.  Grew up in ME - Harrison/Bridgton area.  Snowmobiled every winter until I went off to college.  Definately want to get back to it some day.  My sled was a 1978 Arctic Cat Panther 5000.  I cant count how many times I rolled it.  Got real good with fiberglass.

Just take the skis off and put on some pontoons and go to the beach or across your local pond.  Looks like fun.  The midwest could sure use some about now.

Grass and water work...sand and gravel screw up the slides and on the old sleds, they had bogie wheels, newer ones have sliders to be less bumpy.  The old bogies could have handled sand..like a tank!  Thanks Will...fun times on the old sleds huh?  The Polaris Cobra was a 1978 and know the Artic Cat you are talking about...Panthers..the old ones were none too light either.  Metal bar across track for traction could cause some major rocks and sticks to fly out and nail the rider behind you though right?  Some of the older Cats had the strap on gas tank that slid into the cowling next to where your feet went...had to use one of those strap ons when the old snow jet's metal gas tank rusted up and could not keep carb clean and unclogged! The new ones are so much more comfortable, no on one knee leaning for all you are worth with two riders around a corner.  The new ones are wide and you just sit and steer.  Have to really hang on though as way way too fast!
