What's Your Favorite Christmas Memory??

For most of us, there are always special memories that are associated with this special time of year and no matter how stressed or busy we get, that memory comes back and fills our hearts with joy....here is mine!

Who is old enough to remember this movie?? If your children (or you) grew up with the "older" Sesame Street characters, then I am sure you remembered this episode.

Here is why this has become not only a special memory but a family tradition. Years ago when my children were only 5 and 7, they are now 30 and 32, they were sick and we were home alone on Christmas Eve. I could not take them out and so we were not able to get together with the rest of our family. We were watching this movie on TV when my neighbor called to see if we were okay because she noticed we were home. I told her the children were sick and that we could not spend Christmas Eve with our family.

She told me to put one gift for each child on my front door and then hung up. A few minutes later our doorbell rang and we heard bells....Ahhh, you guessed it.. Santa made a special visit to both my children that night. To see the joy on their faces was something a mom does not forget.

It was so thoughtful of my neighbor and I felt so blessed! This video is from a time when TV was able to talk about Christmas and actually say the word without worry of offending anyone. Afterall, Jesus is the Reason for the Season, without the birth of Christ there would be NO Christmas.

At the end of the movie they sing a special song that goes like this..."Keep Christmas with you, all through the year, when Christmas is over, spread some Christmas cheer, these special moments, hold them very near, and keep Christmas with you...all through the year".

I am crying just writing this...so how did this become a family tradition? About 10 years or so ago I was Christmas shopping and found this video. I got so excited and thought I have to buy this for my kids, but they are in their 20's now, how silly, but I did it anyway. They got so excited and ever since, every year we have to watch this together. My son has brought his girlfriend to watch it and now I have my grandson to enjoy this with. Even the year I was dying with pain from a kidney stone, we were all watching it, and I plan on getting the popcorn ready real soon for our next viewing.

Have a wonderful Christmas and treasure the good times together. So what's your favorite Christmas memory?

I used to watch "How the Grinch stole Christmas"...and
"A Charlie Brown Christmas"...both were inspiring.....

I was never really into the muppets.... or Sesame street

Phyllis -- I am right there with you -- I just gave my daughter on her recent 24th birthday a DVD of Shirley Temples movie, "Good Ship Lollipop" .  When she was 4 (20 years ago)  Shirley Temple movies were all she would watch.  I would take her to Block Buster and suggest other movies and she would say NO, I would ask her why and she would say, "because I've never seen them, so I may not like them"   She cried memory "good tears" when I gave it to her!

Christmas Eve Smorgesborg. Rice Pudding and Swedish Bread, Lots of cousins -- a visit from Santa -- and watching for Rudolf's nose in the sky. We gather as much family around us as we can every year and try to duplicate it... minus the pickled herring jello stuff.

AH, that movie was played OVER AND OVER in my house when my son was little.  It cracked me up because it was Sesame Street when I was a kid...not the 90's characters...   That and Elmo Saves Christmas were on multiple times a day at any point during the year LOL!  It's been a while since I've seen them but when you included the lyrics at the bottom of your post I could hear them singing it!

As far as tradition, the original BIG open house on Christmas Eve has evolved over the years but I would say that---Christmas Eve.  Family and Friends, a big buffet of food, endless drinks and dessert, my mom makes her awesome Egg Nog...then around 9pm everyone bundles up to walk down the street to the Church that has a 'live' nativity set up in the old barn behind the rectory---they bring in donkey, llama, goats, ducks, etc and then have lifesize statues of the blessed family inside the barn.  It's just a nice tradition and I MISS IT since I'm not up there anymore.  =(

Phyllis,
Oh, I love this!  Forgive me, my vision is a little blurry just now.  What I don't understand is why do people who do not believe in God celebrate Christmas?  Oh yeah, I know they believe in Santa and think that is what it is all about.

My favorite Christmas memories are celebrating Christmas I was a child (I'm the last of six kids).  All 8 of use would squeeze into the Ford Galaxy and visit each grandparent.  We would pick up some KFC to bring home for our Christmas Eve dinner and then tear open the presents.

Now, all my family is spread across the country and have families of their own.  It has been almost ten years since we were all together.  Every Christmas at my house there is a lot of excitement and many things to do, but for me there is always a small piece missing.  I don't know if it's just me missing my family or the lack of the finger lickin' chicken.   Happy Holidays!

Phyllis, its the little things that stick in our hearts, isn't it?  My favorite Christmas memory is when all of my family was still alive and we gathered at Grandma's house.  My dad was Navy and made it a point to move us during holiday time so on our cross country trips we could be with family for Christmas.

Phyllis-What a great memory for you to cherish! I would have to say my favorite memory from my childhood was getting together with our cousins (who we only saw once a year) and sitting at the kid's table in the kitchen for dinner. We would stick olives on the ends of our fingers, bury the food we didn't like in our mound of mashed potatoes, and giggle and snort until one of the adults was sent in to check on us! Merry Christmas to all!!!
