I heard a statement the other day that caught my attention...

Overnight successes never are.  You just didn't notice the work they were doing to build it.

That statement couldn't be any more true.  How committed are you to being successful in real estate or in any business, for that matter?  In order to be successful in your business, you first need the mindset of someone who intends to succeed and be willing to persist. Success doesn't come overnight, no matter how lucky you are, so you need to be ready to put in the extra work it takes to get ahead.

First, you need to be consistent.  By consistent I mean regular client contacts, creating a "brand" and ensuring that your service is something that clients can rely on.  Create checklists if you need to so you can ensure your service is the same each time.  I love that I can go into any Starbucks and will walk out with an almost identical experience each time.  I know exactly what my coffee will taste like, I know what products I can purchase and I am almost guaranteed the same experience and service.  I strive to create that consistency for all of my clients.  They should come to expect a luxury service treatment from me and they will receive it each and every time.  With our busy lives, who has time to waste on the "what if"?

Second, be available.  This may be obvious but if a client can't get a hold of you quickly, they will move on to someone else.  Remember to check your phone, your email, whatever it is that ties you to clients regularly.

Third, develop your niche.  No matter what product or service you are selling, figure out who it is you want to work with and target that market.  I know that I can not service everyone adequately and I don't try.  Besides, do you really want to work with everyone?  Figure out what you enjoy and specialize in that.

Once you can create a good base with consistent service, availability and a true niche, your success will skyrocket.  Best of luck in whatever business you decide to pursue!  Just remember, overnight successes never are, you just didn't notice the work they were doing to build it.

What a great post, Jen!  I have been in this business for less than 3 years and my "overnight success" is just beginning to kick in.  In my first terrifying year, 2005, I began only in about May and had 1 sale.  The next year, I quadrupled my sales - yeah, 4.  This year, my numbers are SO much better and my future business is coming from all corners.  Even my team leader says I am the prime example of perseverance paying off.  I have what it takes, I just needed to learn the ropes and use the tools.  Still working on maximizing all of that.  I should be an overnight success in about two more years, I figure!

Jen,

You've provided some great info on this post. What you're saying about consistency is so true, yet for many it's one of the most difficult things to accomplish. Consistency in everything including production will provide one with longevity in the business.

Thanks Lynda!  I truly believe consistency is key, no matter how hard it is somedays the results are worth it.

Jen,

How true. There is no such thing as fast road to riches. The Starbucks comparison works well on the consistency point. To get to the top requires plenty of persistent effort and working your niche.

Wow Jen, you nailed it on some keys to success. I definitely agree with showing up and being available. That's at least half the job done, yet so many don't do that. Consistency as you said is also very much a key. Really successful people are often called lucky but they have put in a lot of hard work before they hit their stride.

Jen,

Great points.  There are so many people out there looking for that one little secret that will give them instant success.  Maybe its a book they should buy.... or a lottery ticket.  What most people don't understand is that to be successful, you have to believe that you can be successful and then work towards it.  Spend the time to do what you have to do rather than looking for shortcuts.

I heard someone say once that overnight success takes 5 or 10 years.  I guess no one pays attention to you when you're working your butt off to build the foundation of your success.... then they call you "lucky" once you get there!

Thanks Martin. I think you are right on.  First, you have to believe in what you can do.  Then, that's when the hardwork starts.

I agree Meghan.  For the people who aren't working hard to build their business, I hear them talk about how "lucky" another is.  To me, that seems like an excuse not to work toward your goals.
