Anyone Can Save A Life! - Join the Blood Drive At Hood River Armory March 27th!red cross

When I was growing up, my father was a volunteer on the board of directors of our local Red Cross, so I was pretty much brought up believing in regularly donating blood.

The importance of the gesture, however, was really brought home to me when our own son, at the age of seven, experienced a medical trauma requiring an emergency transfusion of two units of blood to save his life. Luckily, his blood type is quite common so there was plenty on hand, but that's not always the case for everyone.

Donating blood is a great way to give back to your community in a deeply personal way. It is literally a way that anyone can help to save a life. Did you know that just one pint of blood can save three lives?

Join the Hood River Community Blood Drive on March 27, 12:30-6 p.m. at the Hood River Armory, 1590 12th Street, Hood River, Oregon. Sponsored by the Theta Chapter of Beta Sigma Phi. To schedule an appointment or for more info contact Margo Parker at 541-387-3669 or go online to www.redcrossblood.org, sponsor code Hood River.

Gretchen & Mel, not everyone are qualified to donate blood, in my family my husband is the only one has donated over 20 gallons of blood since he was 17, because all the family members are diabetic or anemic.

Kwee is right - if you can donate blood, do it.  I live in a military community and so many people lived in Germany during the mad cow outbreak.  Blood banks will not accept their donation.  I've donated blood, and it is easy, no big deal.  Just be hydrated and you'll be fine!

Kwee, Wow, good for your husband! Something he can really be proud of! Interestingly enough, I'm asking people to give blood, but I can't myself as I'm very anemic. Always have been. At least my blood type isn't rare, though.

Francine, Way to go, doing your part and donating! Thanks for your encouragement that it's not a big deal. I can't give blood, but I imagine it's a lot like when I've had my blood taken for tests and that didn't bother me.
