As I was winding down this evening with my family, we were watching TV.  As luck would have it, the inventor of the Dyson Vacuum was doing a commercial talking about his designs on his vacuum cleaners.  He talked about how they made 5000 prototypes of the machine before they were satisfied with the results of the machine.  He acted excited that they had made 5000 prototypes prior to finding the one that worked.  They weren't failures, just 5000 ways not build a good machine.

I also liked what he said about a design award that he recieved, he mentioned that it wasn't designed for beauty, but rather function.  If an ugly machine would have worked better, he would have gone with that.  I thought of the story of Thomas Edison and the light bulb, very similar, he took several thousand attempts to find the right way to make the light bulb.

I guess where I am going, is that we need to keep going until we find what works for us in Real Estate and in life.  It may take several thousand attempts to perfect our listing presentation, or maybe our pricing formula on homes, what ever it is keep going until you get there.  Also if it works, you may want to keep the ugly model instead of a sleeker model that doesn't work.  Again, Happy Holidays to all!!

That is great way to look at life.  Never give up because one of these times you will get it right and it will be good!

Hi Tony and Darcy:  That is such a great philosophy.  Every "prototype" was just one step closer to success.  In this market it is so easy to get discouraged.   Sometimes simply remembering to put one foot in front of the next can be all it takes to get to that single step that makes things happen.  Thanks for sharing.

That is great encouragement. What works for some may not for others but maybe just needs to have a twist on it and it will fit. Thanks for the thoughts.

Reminds me a lot of the story of Thomas Edison and the invention of the light bulb. In either case, persistence is the key to success.

Great analogy Tony & Darcy.  It so hits the spot.  With the right attitude, anything can be done.

This is a great outlook on life - I'm all about making mistakes - you just have to learn from everyone that you make.

Tony and Darcy - Nice post!  Floyd Wickman has a saying that goes something like this: "Anything worth doing is worth doing wrong until you get it right."

An old saying in sales is that each rejection brings you one step closer to success. i have learned that for each 100 leads I am able to close 2 or 3. I just dont know which ones. A big part of my day is seeking failure to narrow my list down to just the few that are likely to do business with me. And like Edison I keep detailed notes on each failure.

Yes, yesterday a business associate and I had a meeting with a mortgage broker. Our fields go together like peanut butter and chocolate. So, why aren't other brokers knocking down our doors? I don't know about those other 'failures', but this professional has set up for us to visit his nine offices each week and to teach a credit class in March to his agents. You just have to get the right 'team' together. And of course he has been invited to AR.
