Nigeria, Really!

By
Real Estate Agent with Crown Key Realty

I have spent much of my life in the world of Consumer Electronics. What started as a personal passion for stereo equipment, turned into a great career, first in retail and then working for major well known Japanese electronics giant. I was in the business so long and learned things that after a while seemed like simple common knowledge. I was always surprised that some of these things were such a mystery to people outside the industry.

The same thing is now true for me and other Real Estate professionals. A small item in our newspaper today mentioned a man who had been defrauded out of $500.00 while trying to lease a home that had been advertised on Craig's List. The ad stated that the home was move in ready and if you sent $500.00 to an address in Nigeria the keys to the property would be sent immediately in return. Nigeria, really!

The money was sent the keys were not. The problem is that the housing crisis, the bad economy, and increasing prices on rental properties have cause some people to make moves out of desperation. Most people would not send money to Nigeria for any reason let alone without some type of proof and a local contact to meet with. This person did maybe out of desperation, urgent need for housing for a family or a deal that was too good to be true. Possibly all of the above. We can never educate everyone, and not everyone will use common sense, but we can at least hope.

My name is Dale E. Bledsoe with Crown Key Realty and as always I may be reached at 209-481-6031. You may also visit me on the web at www.dalebledsoe.com .

You would hope this Nigeria fraud has been out there so long would never happens but unfortunately it is a numbers game. Think if only have a conversion rate of .001% and there are approximately 150 million legit email account of people who are in their target, this is still 150,000 people. Frightening, cheers cvc

I agree - "Nigeria"....c'mon.

The Craigslist scams are starting to hit here. Last summer, we had a girl who worked at the office try to rent a "too-good-to-be-true" type of place. It so happened that our Broker recognised the house in the photo and stopped her, but some people STILL don't get it....

Dale - I have seen this first hand.  One of my listings was hijacked and put on Craigslist.  People were driving by it after seeing it on craigslist then calling me because they saw my sign.  The scammers must be getting away with it because they keep doing it.

Anyone that stupid deserves to lose the $500.  Are these people living under rocks?  Maybe they are just that desparate!

Sounds like desperation.  No wonder we keep getting these E-Mails with all these scams!

The latest thing here is that the scammers pick the name of a prominent Realtor in the area.  They get our Board mailing list.  They send out an email from the so called fellow agent saying they were on vacation and got stuck or arrested or some such crap.  Ask for money to be sent and they would repay as soon as they return.

The first one we got seemed almost real. We called the agents office to find out he was covering floor time.

Dale, I know people who were "desperate" and allowed a scam to deceive their common sense. They lost six figures after cashing out 401K accounts.  While we may feel that is naive ... we are not in their shoes.  My heart bleeds for everyone who wants to believe enough to be deceived.

Dale, I am sorry that person lost his $500, but these Nigeria scams has been out for years. That said it is sad and I agree with Kathleen.

We have a big problem with Craigslist scams here in Florida.  It is amazing how gullible people must be.  I find it hard to believe anyone would fall for this but apparently they do over and over again.
