This HAWAII STATE HOLIDAY is celebrated every March 26th with most activities on Oahu and Kauai.  If it falls on a weekend, then it is celebrated on the following Monday.   Prince Jonah Kuhio Kalanianaole was born in Koloa, Kauai 1871-1922.  Prince Kuhio

He was known as the "Prince of the People". Through his diligent efforts, Hawaii owes to him much of the cultural climate the planet sees here today. He was destined to become King, but that was stopped when Queen Liliuokalani was overthrown in 1894 bringing an end to the monarchy of Hawaii. His positive persistence did not end. He traveled to Africa from 1899 to 1902 where he joined the British Army to fight in the Second Boer War. In 1903, he became the second Native Hawaiian representative to congress until 1922, at the age of 50, when he passed away from heart disease.   He was the first to introduce a bill that eventually led to Hawaiian Statehood in 1959.  He was also instrumental in moving Congress to approve the Hawaiian Homes Commission Act of 1920 which provided approximately 200,000 acres of land for native people to live on.

Prince Kuhio Federal BuildingThere are streets, highways, schools, buildings and hotels, a beach and statues even dedicated to his name.  http://www.hawaiireal.com/blog/prince-kuhio-beach-waikiki/

His forward thinking and dedication to Hawaii's people helped to shape our government policies, of which the foundation is still in effect today.  He helped to create the observance and other state holiday celebrating King Kamehameha Day which is each June.

The FEDERAL building is named after Prince Kuhio (side note: His grandfather was Piikoi, the King of Kauai).  If you are in Waikiki, there is a statue of him on Kuhio Beach.  There are several events happening this weekend.  Check the Star Advertiser for updates.

Please Comment if you have a unique STATE holiday.

Thank you Bruce for some history background about Hawaii. This part of the world is in my bucket list. My clients went there for their honeymoon and they could not stop talking about it with so much excitement.

Thanks for the short history lesson about Prince Kuhio.  Here in the islands we appreciate what he has done, and therefore appreciate the holiday!

I don't know of a state holiday in Kentucky. College basketball season seems to be the closest we have. No one can concentrate on work when the big game is on.

Dave, it would seem that there would be a Kentucky DERBY day?  When I was young, my father's trucking terminal ws in Louisville, Southern Forwarding Co.  Three years ago, our family went to a vollyball tournament with kids who were participating, we went to the amusement park there.

Hi Joy,
We also have Kamehameha Day, honoring the King who conquered and united all the islands under one rule.

Bruce, what a great post! I enjoy reading the history and am quite jealous of what I imagine to be a pretty terrific lifestyle living in the islands. We dont' have a special holiday in Washington DC per se, but we do have the National Cherry Blossom Festival, which commemorates the 1912 gift from Japan of 3,000 cherry blossom trees to be planted around the Tidal Basin in West Potomac Park, in East Potomac Park and on the grounds of the Washington Monument. This year was the special centennial celevration of that event. Every year thousands come from all over the country-and world-to see the cherry blossoms bloom.
