Housing Trivia: Who Invented The Doorbell?

By

The reason I thought about this is because my current house doesn't have a doorbell, and for the life of me I can't ever remember not having a doorbell in any house that I've lived in. One thing's for sure, not having one is fine with me. But it did make me wonder who came up with this invention, my first thought it had to be the door to door salesman, or any of the other solicitors that wander through the neighborhoods.

As you can imagine door knockers have been around for quite some time, but I was interested in the who invented the first electronic doorbell. That honor goes to Mr. Joseph Henry in 1831, apparently he had a strong interest in electromagnets and came up with the doorbell at 31 years of age, and ever since door to door salespeople have been paying homage to Mr. Henry.

Funny. We don't have a doorbell, but we need one. :) It's on my honey-do list. Never thought I'd say that.

Funny! I think I've only ever lived in one house that DID have a doorbell. Around here friends open the door and holler - that is if the dogs haven't given the alert that someone's in the driveway and gotten us to the door before they get there.

As for non-friends... Maybe I'm not home.

Seriously, I live too far out in the sticks for door to door salesmen. The only strangers who come to our door are either lost or want to read to us from their religious pamphlets. And most of the time, I do answer a knock.

Michael - Oh that is so interesting.  It does seam that door bells are a bit less rude than some of those door knockers.

The photo of the ass door bell is pretty funny. I grew up with no doorbell, but certainly appreciate when you got one.

Thank you for sharing this trivia with all of us.

Hey Michael, we don't see doorbells like the one in your picture in CA.  Must be a MN style.   I'm sure you know wireless door bells do exist.  No wiring is needed.  Thanks for the housing trivia and have an awesome weekend.

Interesting tidbit of information. Not sure I ever thought of that question, but now I know the answer. I for one would prefer not to have a doorbell. Ever since I've had kids, I prefer people to just knock on my door rather than ring that darn bell.

Lindsey~Say what? The honey-to-do list?

Marte~You must really live out in the boonies.

John~I tried to find a unique looking doorbell for this post, and this was the only one I could find!

Hey Roger, I just thought I was the only one without one.

Debbie~I'm not sure what's worse, when my neighbor knocks on the door it sounds like the FBI is coming. NOT that I know what that sounds like.

Thanks Lisa!

You're welcome Joe!

Lloyd~If someone put a doorbell like up in CA, they probably would be arrested. :)

Everyone have an AWESOME weekend!
