Okay Okay your right I don't have any children....   But it wouldn't be the first time said "Dez you are crazy".

Okay on occasion if you've ever spoken to me I might have mentioned "feeding my kids".    I've promised for along time now photos of my kids during their feeding frenzy.    My Assistant pointed out to me yesterday during this session that as i treked through my back yard in bright green plastic shoes so I didn't get muddy, looking a mess.  That this was the Desiree that everyone needs to see.

Everyone thinks I am this professional real estate dynamo who doesn't always have a human side.  Well for anyone that knows ME they know that couldn't be further from the truth.

So here are my kids.  I know you won't all agree with me feeding them....  but its not going to stop me.   We have an agreement I feed them and they don't eat my plants.      Seriously we have an understanding.

And yes, I can stand on my deck and "call" them and they come .... so ha ha ha I know you're all jealous.  Did I mention that my house is surrounded by a community of about 3000 homes.   This is not a rural area at all.

So whenever I need alittle bit of sanity off to my deck I go to hang out with the kids.    These aren't the best pictures but I just took them and I am standing probably within 10 feet of them... pretty cool huh.

Desiree, I did a recent post about not feeding the deer (ticks), but your pics makes me feel like grabbing some deer food (what do they eat, anyway, after they've finished the flowers)?  No- can't do it.  Except, they are in for a rough night tonight...your pic is AMAZING.

Hey Dez - how cool is that??!?!?!?  I've tried to snag a few good shots of the deer I get in my backyard, and I just don't manage it.  I get wild turkeys, deer, a red fox once, and who knows what else.  And I'm in a good-sized town, too.

My kids are the birds I feed in my back yard, and any deer that might wander through, but mostly the birds that I love watching.  I knew nothing about animal life when I first moved into this house 4 years ago, but I've come to know and love them all.  I have my binoculars close by when a bird I'm not familiar with lands on any of my feeders....love to look them up and learn about them.

That many deer at one time in your yard is awesome - wish I could see that in person!!!

I'm trying to figure out why you wouldn't want to feed the deer and all I can come up with is the poop that gets left behind.  Why not feed the deer? And who cleans up the poop?

Loved the photos!

Laurie -Oh I remember your post.    That was the reason I didn't post about them earlier.   Wasn't sure what people would think.     Funny that you were the first too comment... lol

Anyway I feed them either apples or corn.    Ironically I buy 100lb bags of corn from the local "army" store.   Its cheep 6.99 per 100lbs.    And let me tell you all those red neck hunters from that store would love to know where I live so they could hunt em' down.

I pay with cash <grin>

Excuse me, Desiree, to Amanda:  when the deer overpopulate in my area, they are really hazardous- it feels like a shot in the dark, they jump into the road so unexpectedly.  I hate driving at dusk in the spring and summer.  Yet, anytime elimination is mentioned, I cringe.  Also, they carry Lymes disease (our dog was treated for it after a tick).  They feed on every new flower that I bring home within an hour of planting it.  That part is fine, because I'd forget to water the flower anyway.  Their poop is likely good for the grass.

Maybe I'll just throw a little food outside- it's supposed to snow/rain.

What a beautiful sight.  Occasionally, I'll open the door to deer in the back and it feels like a magic moment.  When they run, it seems like their hooves never quite touch the earth.

Ann - Al has all these great bird houses they he puts up and never fails those pesky squirrels empty them immediately.    Funny part was he bought some free standing ones thinking the squirrels couldn't get to them and guess what happened.....

...........Now I don't have an action shot but if you notice the bird feeder near the baby deer.   What they did was the momma dear would go up to the feeder with her nose and push it sideways ... dumping out all the seed and the Little ones ate it.

I would laugh.... Poor Al thought the squirrels were the cause and ya know what I let those little rodents take the fall...   Then as time went on he finally caught them in the act.    Down came the last of the bird houses

Who would have thought I'd learn about not feeding deer @ Active Rain?  This place is endless with knowledge!  I never considered the hazards before now.  I am from Texas and population control is handled a little differently.

As much as I love ya Laurie...  I promise you that my kids won't jump in front of your car or eat your flowers... deal??!!

As far as the poop goes I agree with Laurie its probably great fertilizer.

Hey Dez,

My parents main home is in Louisville, Kentucky...also in a very busy part of town and they have numerous deer also. The deer only started coming around in the past 10 years, we never had deer when I was a kid and lived at home, but we had other wildlife. Great Pictures.

INTRODUCING 'TACO'...

Dez - I love the idea of watcing wild life in my backyard, my Mother lived in Vermont and watching the deer was amazing, the squirrels and birds...so much fun. I so could live there and witness that every year! If it weren't so dang cold! Thanks for sharing your photos, I had been wanting to see these for some time. So sorry the squirrels have taken the bird houses out, I love bird houses! Has Al put away his 'big shooter'?

Dez - I have those metal cone things on all of my bird feeder poles.  They stop the squirrels and chipmunks from getting at the feeders.  And they really work, too!  I also have a squirrel-proof feeder that came from LL Bean - works with deer, too.  Little critters love all the stuff that gets dropped by the birds who dine at Annie's Restaurant in the backyard - fun to watch.  I have 3 familes of beautiful cardinals that dine on my food right now - it's really interesting to watch how they interact with each other.

Dez, those photo's are beautiful and they are gorgeous animals. I am so conflicted, here in MI we have SO many, but I don't think I would have in in ME to ever shoot one. Of course, I've never shot any gun, but you get the point.

Those were the coolest pics!  I do love seeing them graze (well not on my flowers, but whatcha gonna do?) and will never take them for granted.  We've got a few "families" in the area that'll be seen together every once in a while.

In these parts (God do I sound like a hick!), we can't leave food out for them; along with our deer friends, we've also got a lot of more intimidating wildlife.... black bears.  Really cool spotting them on occasion too (from the safety of my car).

Great pics, mom!

I'd be scared one of the kids would come into my house.  My grandmas neighbor had a deer jump through the glass door a couple weeks ago.  Really tore the place up (One of those freaky things that would likely never happen again). Almost scared that old lady half to death!  She had to climb out a BR window and go to Grandmas to call the police.  When they opened the back door he ran out and headed for the woods.

I could think of worse things to have in my yard though Snakes, spiders, rats, scorpians.  Very cool pictures.  Do they let you get close enough to feed them?

Beautiful kids, Dez !  I don't see any problem with feeding them, so much of their habitat has been destroyed that perhaps a helping hand now and then doesn't hurt them at all.  They look very tame !

I can't say I disagree with  you for feeding them because it sounds like the area you live in is being overtaken by homes.  Lots of animals have to adapt or die (survival of the fittest) when we develop on a wide scale.  I think the pictures are really cool Dez and you are so fortunate to be able to have that as your backyard!  You are like the Kool-Aid Mom..LOL!
