How long is your tail?

By
Real Estate Broker/Owner with Pareto Realty TN #251071

Or do you even HAVE a tail?

on the internet, that is . . .

A "tail" is a prominent presence on the internet so that when people search for things on Google or other search engines, they land on your site whether it be a blog site or your primary website. I've been experimenting to check the validity of the tail theory and am finding it to hold water.

I have 2 blogs - Here and at www.creatingspaces.blogspot.com . . .

A website for our real estate sales group at www.theowengroup.net (Built by www.z57.com)

Another Real Estate Sales website at www.theowengroup.biz (our "template site" from Keller Williams Realty)

Am on www.Facebook.com - www.linkedin.com - www.plaxo.com - www.skype.com

and have registered with every free Real Estate related site I have come across in the past year.

The results?

Phenomenal . . . What I experienced was that with only the blogsite on blogger.com, I only got minimal traffic UNTIL I started adding the other sites and cross-linking them . . . On that blogger site, my content is not ONLY real estate - It is also a collage of philosophical musings and personal thoughts . . . I am now getting traffic from all around the world on that site . . . people googling famous authors I have mentioned . . . all the way down to local folks googling local contractors.

What caused me to write this today is that one of my vendors (a handy man) gave me a HUGE basket of goodies in appreciation for all of the business we sent him this year. This basket had so much stuff in it, I could not imagine bringing it home so I decided to leave it on the table in our break room . . . I figured it would take not much longer than 30 minutes for our associates to consume the contents . . . and I wanted to give him credit . . . so I googled him to see if I could print his website as a "brochure" . . . He doesn't have a website . . . instead MY website popped up as the number ONE hit.

I got to thinking . . . I wondered . . . so I started googling other people I know who I might have written about somewhere in my blogs . . . Invariably, my blogsites were popping up on the first page of results. Now, I'm not certain of the direct benefit of a guy in Thailand landing on my Tennessee Real Estate Site . . . but I cannot imagine that it would hurt . . . Who knows?

I really think it is simply the same old game (Numbers game) . . . The more people that show up, the better the odds that something useful will come of it. If nothing else, I know that I have a higher degree of familiarity in some groups/demographics, and I am intrigued how the synapses seem to be spontaneously happening. There is one globally famous author who contacted me directly (by phone) to connect because his webmaster told him that he was getting a large number of hits on his site from my blog-site . . . I had read his book - Liked it - and blogged about it . . . we have become "occasional friends" talking on the phone every month or so . . .

And then I noticed that I was getting hits on my site from his . . . He had posted a link there to my blog about him as a testimonial . . .

What is it that ALWAYS works when you're trying to market yourself?

PERSISTENT (Consistent) Exposure to LOTS of people and a pure message . . .

That's all!

:-)

Best,

b

I see some of you using up your valuable time making a SHORT comment to this blog post. Problem is, you will NOT get points unless your comment is more than 50 words and you get points on only 10 comments per day, so USE your time wisely! Barb Adams, trying to be helpful Realtor

This article really rings a bell with me.  I have a small real estate company in upstate new york and the national speaker Ralph Roberts came and spoke at our association and he was urging allof us to join myspace.  Almost against my judgement I have done this and joined google , and several others .  So far i have not had much traffic, but from what you are saying, perhaps I am on the right track.  thank you for the sign post.  Joe woutersz

Barry,

What a great post!  I've worked on researching with keyword analyzers for the area's top searches.  All of the area car lots are well above real estate here.  My winter project is going to be blogging helpful directories & posts on the top search terms, in hopes of redirecting people to my blog, and ultimately to my website.  Oh ya, and to the closing table. Ha!

I posted a list of all Realtors that are a member of my board some time ago. This is the #1 result when over 75% of my competing Realtors are googled.  Shhh. Don't tell them.

Long-tailed, and growing,

Erika

Barry - It never hurts to get your tail name out there. If you can help other vendors while helping yourself, that is great. I recently posted about a local fiber optics company. The next day my post ranked above their own website in Google.

Barry, that was a good post. More agents are getting on the internet every day, but only a few have overcome "writer's block" and contribute to forums or have a blog (or two). Those early adapters are still the ones with the longest tails. I have started to share my online successes with key vendors to get them ranked higher in the search engines. They have been very appreciative and I've become their primary agent.

Barry,

I have heard about this tail, but haven't really looked into it. The idea is coming into focus now after reading your blog and seems to make sense. Have to implement it as soon as possible. Great stuff.
