ChristmasI was prompted to write this entry in my blog by Sharon Simms of St Pete, Florida who has just blogged about inviting someone over for Christmas

You see at this time of year there are thousands of men and women who serve in our armed services who are hundreds if not thousands of miles from home and only have what the military is able to dish up.

A good friend of mine and retired military himself told me that if I were to call the First Sergeant of my nearest military base and let them know that I had two seats at my Christmas table available for any serving military, then he would find the right two and set the whole thing up.

This is truly a great way to remember that it is our Military that allows us the freedom to enjoy these special days. This will certainly help you fulfill a desire to thank those who serve and you will find it extremely rewarding.

Certainly you might find it a little awkward for a couple of minutes, but once the ice is broken it is indeed extremely rewarding. There is still time to set this up and so I urge you to contact the First Sergeant of your nearest base today.

This picture is of our 2007 tree once finished but before presents!! Hopefully Santa will remember all of you who remember our military.

Thanks for posting this, Simon. It's helpful to know who to call - the First Sergeant. I hope someone reads this and follows through.

This is a great idea.  People forget about the military if the media is not putting them down.  They are out there doing a job most others are not willing to undertake.

Great idea. I hope some out there take advantage of the opportunity to show their appreciation for our military.

Simon, what a wonderful idea!  I tried to talk our son into going with a family while he was in Germany but couldn't talk him in to it.  I think he was scared of those first uncomfortable moments.

This year we are fortunate to have him with us for the holidays as he is now based at Fort Hood.  He leaves for Iraq again in March.

Natalie - thanks for bringing this post back to the top. I think it is so important that we remember why we are free and who we have to thank.
