REALTORS, whether you say YES or you say NO, either way there is an Opportunity Cost!

No decision IS a decision, so when you say YES or NO to an appointment or a listing, there is a cost no matter what.

But when you make the decision of taking or declining the appointment or listing, here is the scoop.

That overpriced listing that is going to take a year to sell until the number is reached that you told the Seller in the first place would work?

How many extra sales have you forfeited or gained by saying NO? It is a choice you know!

That appointment to meet you on the spot and drop everything you are doing because supposedly this Purchaser is HOT as a lead?

Not! That same discourteous, disrespectful ME ME behavior will be evident in each part of the home buying process. 

RUN don't walk to the nearest exit.

How does the drain of energy and drain of time work well for you over a career time of Realtor activities?

Safety issues, time management issues, commitment responsibilities, fair housing issues set aside...

As Realtors we get paid to sell homes. That does not mean forfeit good sense, confirmed  schedules, and respectful or considerate treatment.

You train people how to treat you. Accept doormat, you get it.

What is wrong with the words "no thank you" when it comes to not agreeing to take an overpriced listing or even terminating one when the selling party is no longer cooperative. We each operate as independent contractors and not as a rescue operation for the collapse of the housing market. Saying "yes" means more than opportunity costs, it means you folded. Great post and advice!

Good post. Sometimes it is better to say no and move on. You'll probably be a lot less frustrated, have more time in your life and earn more!

For me, overpriced listings and instant demands to do one time instant property showings without a loan pre approval have been and always will be a No. I hang my hat on that and understand the cost and benefits of this career choice.

Way back in my earliest business courses they talked about opportunity costs. When you do one thing, you lose the opportunity to do something else. We all have the same 24 hours each day. We need to decide how to make the best use of them.

Cheryl ~ you're right when you say that we train people how to treat us ... and no amount of disrespect is worth a commission of any size.  Sellers who insist on overpricing their home can find someone else!
