Solar Powered Vineyards

I don't drink alcohol, but for those of you who do I would like to recommend wines from Stoller Vineyards in Dayton, Oregon. The vineyards technology uses renewable resources to make their wine. More than 50% of the land outside the buildings was restored with a native meadow mix. After two years the native plantings will need no irrigation. The facility is the first in the nation to be certified LEED Gold.

The structure is 24000 square feet with a south facing roof that supports a photovoltaic array. The array produces 40,000 KW and 70% of the winery's electrical needs. The combination of orientation and daylighting reduces the need for artificial lights. Natural ventilation is used wherever possible. Old growth wood beams were salvaged from a local retail location and milled and used for porches, columns and stair treads and many recycled materials were used in the construction.

One third of the 373 acres is planted in Pinot Noir and Chardonnay grapes. Enjoy--but don't forget to designate a driver first.
